OUACHITA PARISH, La. (KNOE 8 News) - The crosswalk on Highway 34 is forcing Sharon Whitley to be one concerned mom and wife. Her son and husband, like many, used the crosswalk to get to work at graphic packaging in West Monroe.

"He had to cross it every day. So, I prayed every day that he did not have any kind of problems crossing the highway," Whitley said.

She heard stories that worried her.

They should call the police before they cross. having a police presence is the only way to truly feel safe.

So, while her husband and son walk to work, she tools around in a fairly new white trash mustang.

I believe the crosswalk is from an employee lot across the street from the plant.

If she was really worried about the highway, why not drop her loved ones off at the front door instead of having them cross the highway on foot every day?

Maybe she should have a little more confidence that her husband knows how to cross a street safely.

A little context: The crosswalk isn't at an intersection. It is across a four lane (plus turning lane) highway where the speed limit is 45 or 50. The main problem is at night when drivers can't see the pedestrians.

I believe the parking lot is for contractors not employees of Graphic Packaging. Car are supposed to stop and during shift changes there is usually a deputy there. However,a lot of the pedestrians will just step in front of cars without worrying if the cars see them in time to stop.

They have police out there directing traffic at shift change but that is the contractor lot. The employees park in front and do not have to cross traffic to get through the turnstiles.

Kind of like a certain culture around here in parking lots.
