ALL COUNTY, Ga. (CBS46) Crews have retrieved the body of a man who drowned after his personal watercraft overturned on Lake Lanier.

According to Hall County Fire Services, the incident happened at the day area use of Shoal Creek Park in South Hall.

The department says the driver, later identified as 30 year-old Reginald Whitehead of Perry, Ga. was trying to bring the watercraft into a boat ramp when it overturned. Divers later found Whitehead's body around 10:45 p.m.

Police say Whitehead didn't know how to swim and he wasn't wearing a life jacket.

It's the second drowning death on Lake Lanier over the Memorial Day holiday weekend. This comes a day after 61 year-old Michael Thompson drowned near a boat dock on Lake Lanier.

Darwin award goes to Reggie.

On a more serious note, thoughts and prayers may be needed for me next weekend

Pretty shitty to say without knowing the circumstances.

Unless he jumped on the jet ski to save a drowning baby, I think Darwin award is pretty appropriate.

Wasn’t there a poster on here the other day asking about advice on first time using a boat for a bachelor party? Didn’t he say he was going boating on Lake Lanier this past weekend?

It could have been him

Well, unless he was attempting a rescue of some sort he shouldn’t go in the water without a life jacket on. So as cold as that comment is it’s true.

Back when I was 16 I taught 3-4 year olds how to swim. Kind of dumb to go around water having no clue how to save yourself

Lake Lanier has to have the most drownings per capita of any water body in the world. I lived 10 minutes from Lake Lanier for 6 years and my perception could be wrong but it seemed like at least a once per month occurrence through the summer someone was dying due to drowning or boating accident. I guess it's just a function of being a very crowded lake.

He's 30, good chance he already has procreated. Should be an auto DQ for a Darwin award.

I'm at lake lanier.

You are spot on. And the Darwin award doesn't have to apply. Swimmers die in the lake all the time.

More often than not, it is two deaths together. 1 kid or person is struggling and another goes in to help. Neither make it out.

My kids are all on swim teams, but I require life jackets in the lake. That dark water is no joke.

Sad, but that's part of the game. Definitely a Darwin consideration is at order.

It is also surprising how far a body will move underwater. I was on Cross Lake late in the day a few years ago and some guy who was drunk fell off his boat and drowned. He was pretty close to the main boat laucnyh. The other guys on the boat pointed out exactly where he fell out. We were the only boat out at that time and we looked around at length in the area where they said the man fell out. Nothing.

He was found about 100 yards away from where he supposedly fell out.

He was operating a jet ski w/o a life jacket knowing he couldn't swim. Not the best decision he could have made.

NPR article on Lake Victoria drownings

quote:

WHO lists Africa as the region with the highest rate of drowning in the world, with about 8 drownings for every 100,000 people. By comparison, just 1.5 people drown to death for every 100,000 Americans. In Germany it's 0.6.
