I've owned Golden Retrievers since 95. I got my first back then and after about 5 years we got another to give him a companion. I knew right away that I made a good decision. My wife and I work so with two dogs they aren'y alone all day. They have a companion that they understand. After my oldest passed away, I waited about a year or two and got another.
The younger dog is easier to train because they will key off the older dogs actions. The one thing I would recommend is that you never get two puppies at the same time. You need to have establised your role as the alpha with the first dog, and had time to bond with them completely before you add a second one. Two puppies will focus on each other and not you.
I'm now on Golden's numbers 3 and 4. I hope to have both of them a VERY long time. But when one eventually passes, I'll mourn for a while, and then get another.

We got our second Golden when our first Golden was five. While it was great for them to have each other, I later realized that the younger dog bonded with the older dog and not us. She didn't really become OUR dog until the first one died, seven years later. And then not until she got over her grief.
Second Golden lived to be 13.5. Had to put her down about two weeks ago. :(
We are now debating a new dog. I've never had a cat before and I'd love to try a couple of those.

It sounds like you were't aware of the possibility of this happening and so didn't plan/act accordingly. (Not a slam, just a guess).
When adding a second dog I spend a lot of time with just the two of us, training and communicating with them exclusively. The older dog gets their "me time" too, but you have to seperate them and form that bond.
It also helps to have gone through some obedience training that will help you understand how dogs think and how humans need to act to communuicate with them. Obedience training isn't really about training your dog. It's about training YOU how to train your dog. Dog's are incredibly observant and have thousands of years of adaptation to help them out. We just need to understand their language, and learn to speak it with them.

Have 3 German shepherds. First one had for two years and could tell he was lonely and wanted a friend. So got a female. Was the best thing we did for him. He wasn't so dependent on us for attention and to play all the time.

Yep. It was our first experience with two dogs. We loved how well they bonded. Just didn't even realize it wasn't with us, so much. I mean, she liked that we gave her food and water and shelter, but didn't seem as excited to see us as our older dog. She loved us in her old age, though.

Pros- they are pack animals and much happier always having a pack member around for security in your absence. Mine seem much happier whenever I have at least 2.
Cons- when 1 passes away it is terrible to watch the other suffer. I have actually had dogs pass away quickly from pure grief after the first dies. That shows you how important the pack companionship was...

This. The dogs keep each other entertained. Some dogs get upset if they're left alone, and they tear up the house when you're gone.
I've had dogs who were perfectly happy being the only dog and others who needed a companion.

LOL at the haters. Congrats - you look tough walking your pit bull through your trailer park. My Yorkie is awesome. He's around 10-11 pounds and acts like he's five times that size. He's very much a terrier and loves to hunt critters in the yard - one of our rituals is going frog hunting every night. He'll play with and torment a tree frog for 10-15 minutes before I can bribe him away from it. He's every bit as active as the Jack Russells I've had. And I don't have huge piles of crap to clean up. Accidents in the house are mostly irrelevant. He's a total beast, and I love that little bastard like he's one of my kids. Maybe I'll buy him a $40K car too.

We had that happen once. We adopted a puppy from the shelter and gave it to the dog we still had.

Two dogs are always better IMO. The only time they may not be is if you need someone to watch them at their house when you are out of town but if you have good friends it is really no biggie.

Just the sound of my dogs barking--a 75-lb. lab mix and a 60-lb. shepherd mix--is enough to deter any criminal with half a brain from intruding on our house. Don't even need a gun.

Get another dog.
I used to be weary of this. My one dog was about 10. Very healthy and built. However around 5 or so he started getting skin and allergy issues, and his personality changed. He was always moping around and sleeping a lot.
I found a 1 year old lab and brought her home about a year and a half ago. Best decision I made regarding my older dog. He has more pep, his skin issues have pretty much disappeared (he was on daily medication), and he's a lot happier.
They get along great with each other and my little girl.
