Two ships collide in open water off the coast of China.

It appears the southernmost ship continually changes course to hit the other ship. I'm no sailor, but it seems like gross negligence for something like this to happen. What says the OT sea farers?

Collision Course

This is a very extreme and long example of target fixation.

Kinda like when airplanes hit in mid air.

So much space!

In the days of AIS and satellite mapping it is hard to see how two ships that large could collide.

That graphic was so helpful. Two arrows on the end of lines running into each other really puts it into perspective

I have a container leaving Quingdao tomorrow. I've always wondered what kind of bullshite I would have to go through if the ship sank, or if the container fell off the ship, etc.

It's been a while but I'm pretty sure the navigation rules of the road say that when 2 vessels approach like that they should both alter course to starboard to avoid a collision and pass each other on the port side.

Looking at that video I'd say the southernmost vessel was captained by a rah-tard.

Is that the Sea Shepard anti whalers driving the Jasper? I might understand then.

i thought it was understand when two boats are heading towards one another each should veer to the right to pass. The Jaspers captain seemed to think otherwise because he turned directly towards the other boat.

Not only that, but I don't see how it is possible with your own EYES. I see you coming, you see me coming, GTFO of the way.

Yeah it isn't set in stone, it depends how you're approaching in the first place, but the bottom line is that it shouldn't happen unintentionally.

You wouldn't even have to worry about this if you had your goods "made in America". Come on, we need your help to make America great again.
