I'm surprised we don't have more pedestrians hit here in TX, people think those little crosswalks with their flashing lights in neighborhoods are force fields, they just hit the button and stroll right out into traffic without even looking, they may have the right of way but the vehicle wins every time

I was expecting to read that the children were driving a golf cart or side by side when hit. The amount of parents that let their children drive alone all over that subdivision is insane.

To the extent people even pay attention to speed limits, no neighborhood street should have a speed limit over 25 mph, and in some cases even 20 or 15 mph. Is that extra 15 seconds you might save on a half mile drive down the street really worth it? That extra 5 mph in a crash could be the difference in a minor injury or someone dying, the data overwhelmingly backs up this up. But we all drive too fast and too distracted at times.
Also important, all of our vehicles are so damn big today which makes it much harder to see objects in the road in front of you. I remember being able to reach everything under the hood of our 90s Silverado from the front of the truck. But in the 2024 model I damn near need a stool to reach anything under the hood.

all valid points but the pedestrians have a role in this too, pay attention before stepping into the street

The street parking thing is interesting, as I certainly see it as an aggravating factor and upping the danger.
But plenty of police departments will say cars on the street are natural traffic calming measures.

This is actually a good idea. It’s a terrible problem in our neighborhood so we get cops out to patrol. Unfortunately, when we do, we have a few idiots in the neighborhood who think it’s a good idea to warn their neighbors of this and post on NextDoor that there are cops out today. So it’s not a productive day for the cops in terms of writing tickets and the speeding continues.

Oh, it will piss off some people but they won’t bitch about it publicly. Let the wives police the husbands when they are called out on the neighborhood page. Only 1 guy ever got posted more than once and he just DGAF. He finally starting leaving the neighborhood another way bc too many people got pissed off at him.

If they warn them the cops are out, doesn't that mean they don't speed?

Yeah but just for the hours the cops are there. Police can’t be there every day. You have to make it not worth it to them long enough to break the habit and discourage the behavior.

It’s one of the biggest factors that contributes to kids being hit within neighborhoods, even more so than speed. People pay much less attention when driving the same route frequently and lower speeds. Much more likely to be on the phone, connecting music, looking in purse, etc.

We all need self driving cars. Problem solved for the most part. Sure you'll have a few technical difficulties here and there that will kill some people but overall driving related deaths would go down 1000 fold.

We have a much bigger issue with cars not stopping for people in a crosswalk. If there are pedestrians in the crosswalk, vehicles must stop. Period.
They screwed themselves here by not stopping for the high schoolers crossing a 45 mph 4 lane road with median. After three kids got hit over a year, they installed a timed traffic light 1 block away from an already existing one. It lets so many cars go by before turning red for 30 seconds.

shite, in my hood it's the womens who speed because they are always late.
We have one entrance that is .8 mile long, originally the speed limit was 40 mph. After complaining the parish dropped it to 25 mph and now the neighbors in the back drive 40 mph instead of 50 mph.

Yeah. Our neighborhood is 70% sahm so it’s the men rushing to work at the same time kids are going to middle school here. It’s the moms lining their up the side of the road and pulling in and out. Both are contributing factors.
ETA I have a pretty heavy foot and drive a pretty fast car but I am super cautious within the neighborhood.

its a gated neighborhood built around a golf course, how many golf cart accidents have they ever had?

Like another poster said, you have to put blame on pedestrians for all these same reasons too. Easier for them to stop than a car. Also, hustle across the street instead of rushing to get to the cross, and then slow down. People that purposely cross slowly deserve to get some chin music and whatever karma comes their way.
Blame can be placed all around.

Second hand info, but should be reliable.
1 should be released today.
Other had Impact to head from passenger side mirror and then leg injury from back of vehicle. Not reported to be serious head injury as of now.
Edit; I’ll delete if anyone says I was misinformed
Pretty spot on. As someone described above they were leaving the pool when it occurred. Didn't get details of exactly how it happened though.
My wife was on a text thread this morning. One girl was released from the hospital with minor injuries. Had some bruising and elevated liver enzyme levels so they were concerned about her liver. The other girl did have a head injury and was in serious but not critical condition I believe.

Yeah. The kids should listen to their parents and never enter a street without checking for cars first. Of course.
But, when weighing blame, I’m going to hold the adult to a higher responsibility than kids any day.
