And / or "Racist".
They worked overtime last night to paint this as a racial issue.
1. They got a guy up who stated that if they voted against the millage it would be a "civil rights violation" because "the majority of the people at COA are black." Which was laughable and pretty stunning that he would just make something like that up.
2. The COA had signs made that said "Is this tax about -Power? -Money? -Control? OR RACE???"
3. A COA employee standing next to me said out loud when a guy stood up to speak against the measure: "He is just saying that because he is white." I just started at her and she glared back. Pretty damn surprised she said that out loud.

I made a Facebook post with her information and map of district 12. and encouraged all of BR to let her know and even outside of BR if you do bidness in BR. Prop tax affects EVERYONE from owners to renters to retail shoppers coming in from out of the city.

Did anyone with their own eyes or reliable "sauces" get a picture of the buses that the elderly or EBRCOA "leaders" rode in on? I know they said a couple paid for the cost of transportation - but for all we know, that could have simply been "gas" to pay for the buses that are owned by the taxpayers.
Did they charter out a bus or buses?

I always hated the council making decisions for us. Remember Pinnacle(they let us vote on) and Alcohol(they did not)?
He values the voters' decision over the Council making them for us.
I agree with that. I had no big deal with the tax passing voters. But it should have been tabled until all this tomfrickery over there clears and THEN we vote again.

quote:there are more than that, they have to file quarterly reports on spending too and the council will get to pick one member for their board, the coa won't get to pick. New new head of the COA seems to want to do good but I won't be satisfied until the director is out. they have added a few new board members like william daniel so thats a good sing imo.
The "safeguards" she speaks of is that the COA has to come back for an annual renewal of the millage BUT..
quote:Her contention is that if they did not get it approved last night (they are obligated to approve some part of the millage, just not 0%) they would be sued. I watched the entire thing and the parish attorney did not state that, only the 0% thing was confirmed by the P.A. Fireberg flipped at the end when she found out delaying the vote 2-4 more weeks would back up the process so that the millage could not be enacted by the aug 16 deadline in place. Once she was told that you could see it in her eyes she was like frick, what do I do now..so she flipped. I don't agree with her choice but the cake she baked for a sterling 38th bd and brought to the meeting was good, carrot cake too.
If her contention is that they couldn't reduce or repeal the millage because of "a lawsuit the Council would not win." Then explain to me how the threat of a lawsuit will change in 12 months. SERIOUSLY explain to me how, if that is the reasoning, letting a year go by somehow alters the facts. Is this "control" if the simple threat of a lawsuit defeats it?

Its not this cut and dry - the city has already spent $600,000 on this building. The 1.3 million is federal disaster recovery money that has to be used or the city will lose it. they chose to use it to remodel the building and are charging the COA $3500/month rent. Still not ideal but not as simple as "council just gave them 1.3 Million."
I understand that the city owns the building. I understand that the people authorized a tax for the COA to renovate and construct facilities. I don't understand your comment about the city having 1.3 million dollars in federal funds that they can't use when our city has so many problems as it is.
And it is simple, the Council just gave the COA 1.3 million dollars More.
You have areas of this city that poor people are living in that are falling apart. You can't tell me that these areas couldn't use 1.3 million dollars.
The truth is the real reason is you have to be connected to latch on to the federal dollars. You can't just have a problem, you have to know somebody.

Delgado voted "yes" to allow the tax to go on the November ballot, knowing the financial mismanagement that was going on, so he's even more to blame for it than that. Remember that when you hear him now criticizing the COA.
Thank you, and the same goes for Kip Holden. He didn't do anything to stop the vote.
They were all steamrolling this thing way before Broome and the current Council were handed this pile of crap.

I was going to reply with the same thing.
They hired school buses. Are school buses privately owned and available for hire?
