As kids we did this and the cigs always went out. I'm sure they could have ignited the gas, but they didn't.

What's the up side for leaving it on?
Keeping yourself and the inside of the vehicle cool in summer and warm in winter.

Because I think we all know what the downside is.
And what would that be?

I always leave it running. Usually once I start my car in the summer out here I don't turn it off until I get to my final destination. If I need to get gas or run into a store I just leave it running so my AC can keep cranking.

No. But that is an answer to the question, "What's the up side for leaving it on?"

I witnessed a pump overflow at the gas station last Sunday. Is it bad that the first thing I thought of was what would happen if I lit a match and tossed it over there?
I once saw a guy accidentally leave the nozzle in his truck and he pulled away before he realized it. Instead of going inside and owning up to it (or just leaving it sitting on the ground), he tried to reconnect it himself. He ended up breaking the connector while he was standing underneath it and was treated to a shower of gasoline. I bet a dozen or so gallons came out before they got it shut off.

I've been told it makes your check engine light come on.
Businesses have to manage risk when selling a flammable liquid. It may only slightly increase the chance of fire, but they have to cover all of the bases when it comes to safety and risk management.

The oil in your engine isn't all drained back into your oil pan and wear and tear on your starter.

Who sad it was too much to handle? Stop trying so hard.

Is this based on bs science?
I brought my car in for service this morning because an engine light was on, which generally relates to an emissions issue. The first question he asked was if I leave the car running while refueling. Said it does something oxygen related. I've never done this, but apparently it can cause legitimate issues.

Lucky you didn't get hit with the "O2 sensor replacement" where they just screw the gas cap back on

I've thrown lit cigarettes into diesel to scare people. Doesn't flame up then, I doubt leaving it running would make it flame up.

Come back and post when Mr. Car Thief steals that running car while you are jerking off in the store.
It will never happen. I bet you $10,000 that I will never have my vehicle stolen while it's running during gas pumping maneuvers. And my truck will never blow up. And its interior will be sufficiently climate controlled to my liking when I return to it. And I get to jack off in the store while your bitch arse is sweating like a moron with a pump in your hand openly inviting a gang of latinos to come car jack you.

I usually don't. I have yet to blow up.
So we if stop seeing posts from you, should we nominate you for a Darwin award?

No, if I stop posting you should assume that Fuhrer Chicken or one of his Gestapo have unjustly banned me again on some trumped up BS charge. The last thing you should do is think that I've blown myself up via the mythical running vehicle whilst pumping gas syndrome. It simply will not happen.

Who gets back in their car when pumping gas, other than women?
I do when it's fricking cold/windy. Or I wanna do a shot of booze or beer.

Okay I did like my ex-wifes murano for that reason. Remove the key fob with car running, start pumping gas, lock the doors, go pee and get shite from inside store. no problems.

Who pumps their own gas???

Posted on 5/15/15 at 2:05 pm to TheOcean
I turn it off on cold dry days, you know static electricity. I'm not saying if my thinking makes sense or not, it's just what I do
Posted on 5/15/15 at 2:09 pm to eddieray
I always turn it off. A few minutes in the heat or cold isnt that big of a deal.
