i've never heard the F35 described as 4+ or 4.5 generation. it is pure 5th generation...5th gen fighters dont have their weapons exposed visibly (like the F16, F15 etc), they're stored internally.
also the J-20 was copied (stolen) from the F22 by the chinese. its definitely 5th gen

Just because it resembles an f-22/35 on the surface doesn’t make it a fifth generation aircraft. Does it have radar absorbing materials? Those engines probably still leave a nice heat signature too.

It doesn’t have thrust vectoring right? That’s kinda a big deal

Doesn't the su57 carry externally?
I thought I remembered the 35 widely being considered a 4+ type fighter but I guess I stand corrected.
Regardless, aint nobody fielding 5th gen stuff to any effect besides us.

Thrust vectoring isn’t that new. Several gen4 Russian fighters have it. It’s nice to have in a merge but a true 5th gen fighter should never get that deep into the fight.

Not really. If F-35s are engaging within visual range then they’ve already failed.
5th gen is about BVR capabilities. Radar cross section, IR signature, data links, sensor fusion, etc.

There's a valid school of thought that a 5th fight might have to happen at the merge because the countermeasures are so good. It could devolve to a gunfight, which is crazy to consider.

That would be a failure at an operational level to not have AWACS or ground control stations to direct fighters. If it comes to that, the side without eyes is already dead.
