quote:

Tara Leigh Calico (born February 28, 1969)[1] is an American woman who disappeared near her home in Belen, New Mexico, on September 20, 1988. She is widely believed to have been kidnapped. In July 1989, a Polaroid photo of an unidentified young woman and boy, gagged and seemingly bound, was televised to the public after it was found in a convenience store parking lot in Port St. Joe, Florida. Family friends thought the woman resembled Calico and contacted her mother, who then met with investigators and examined the Polaroid. She believed it was her daughter after taking "time, growth and lack of makeup" into consideration, and noted that a scar on the woman's leg was identical to one that Calico had. Scotland Yard analyzed the photo and concluded that the woman was Calico, but a second analysis by the Los Alamos National Laboratory disagreed. An FBI analysis of the photo was inconclusive.

If it’s not Tara, then who is it? Did a brother and a sister decide it would be funny to stage a hoax kidnapping photograph?

I can’t imagine the pain of having a loved one go missing and especially never getting closure. One of life’s cruel jokes.

Does Scotland Yard have some specialized team for aging forensics or something?

We just had some elected officials in the US government stage fake arrest photos, so maybe.

Not sure if serious. It’s Scotland Yard.

On Tuesday, September 20, 1988, Calico left her home at about 9:30 A.M. to go on her daily bike ride along New Mexico State Road 47.[3] She rode that route almost every morning and was sometimes accompanied by her mother, Patty Doel. However, Doel stopped riding with Calico after she felt that she had been stalked by a motorist. She advised her daughter to think about carrying mace, but Calico rejected the idea.

I don’t know, but they’ve been on the forefront of forensic and investigative techniques for more than a century.

It’s a shitty world for women who have to always check over their shoulder even in open daylight on a suburban street.

I guess I’m not understanding your original question.

You ask if Scotland Yard has a special division dedicated to aging forensics (how I I take you to mean “aging” forensics). Just knowing that Scotland Yard is at the forefront of forensics would indicate an obvious “yes.”

i do think the photos are genuine in the sense that it is of two people being held against their will. but whether or not its specifically tara is anyones guess. there are some similarities and scotland yard thinks so but other LEA think otherwise

In 2008, Rene Rivera, the sheriff of Valencia County, reported that he received information that two teenagers had accidentally hit Calico with a truck, panicked, and subsequently killed her.[16] According to Rivera, the boys, who knew Calico, drove up behind her in a truck and some form of an accident followed. Calico later died and those responsible covered up the crime. Rivera stated that he knew the names of those involved, but that, without a body, he could not make a case. He did not release the evidence that led him to this conclusion. Calico's stepfather, John Doel, said that the sheriff should not have made these comments if he was not willing to arrest anyone and that strong circumstantial evidence should be enough for a conviction.[13]

That sheriff is a prick for doing that.

The new TikTok challenge would be the Samantha Koening “proof of life” photo:

….Now, the above Polaroid is creepy enough. I’m not even going to Google the Koening photo. (I saw it once and it’s just too creepy to see again.)

Obviously I didn’t know that which explains how a case from NM made it to them, appreciate the condescending lesson

This makes me believe it wasn’t Calico. The photo was found less than a year after her disappearance, but the mother needed to qualify her claim it was her daughter only after considering "time, growth and lack of makeup".

Her daughter was 19 when she disappeared. A younger girl going through puberty might have a big growth spurt, or their face and body can mature in a short period, but a 19 year old is going to look almost exactly the same 10 months later.

The lack of makeup as a qualifier is also odd. Surely, she was familiar with her daughter’s natural appearance. She was her mother, not a bartender that barely knew her and had only seen her in dim lighting with lots of makeup.

Guy i grew up with went missing in 2011. I haven’t heard anything about it since. He wasn’t family and I wasn’t particularly close with him but just shows it happens. People go missing and never hear from again.

We're talking about 10 months in time, so the photo length was shorter than that. Also, we're not talking about the useless FBI.
