I work in logistics for a large retailer and we're having a super hard time moving our freight.

It seems that for any broker we contract out to, their driver ends up ghosting them on a load for a higher-paying one. We end up having to re-source almost half of the loads we tender out to brokers.

Our asset-based partners are so much more reliable, but stretched thin.

Is the demand for drivers that high right now?

All three of my trucks went down at the same time. I have no fixed them yet as the rates are absolute shite right now. 1 year ago I was average 3.50 (no shite) a mile. Last march I was average 2.10 a mile.

I looked into trucking a few years back.

Pay is decent for a skill they are willing to pay you to learn, but just not quite high enough.

Have to be away from family, training takes you to a random location depending on the company, usually have to be with the same company for half a year before you can have a rider, some companies want you to stay with the same company for a year after training.

Not all of those things are deal breakers themselves, but they are for a median salary of 40k.

If you need your shite hauled across country, sleeping in the cab, with limited meal options, I'll do it. That is, if you let me bring my wife and dog immediately and up your pay to at least $70,000. If that's unrealistic, so be it. But as long as I have other options that's the deal.

Sittin' and starin' out of the hotel window
Got a tip they're gonna kick the door in again
I'd like to get some sleep before I travel
But if you got a warrant, I guess you're gonna come in.

Busted, down on Bourbon Street
Set up, like a bowlin' pin
Knocked down, it gets to wearin' thin
They just won't let you be...

This is hard to believe if demand is high, why are rates low if demand is through the roof?

It’s been a while since my husband drove trucks but the problem with the company he worked for was the drug and alcohol tests. He was always clean, so he took on a lot of extra driving. But that got old quick.

I’m sure with the pandemic, people are drinking and using more drugs - so perhaps there’s a driver shortage.

Interesting article on Business Insider about how plenty of truckers left in 2019 bc of the lack of manufacturing - but now there’s a surge in deliveries bc of online shopping - I can’t link it for some reason

the Petro off Walden Road in Beaumont appears to be what you are looking for. That fricker rivals Tiger Truck Stop for seedy, trashy, nasty people and facilities.

but when you gotta go, you gotta go.

I work the flatbed market. Trucks are a dime a dozen right now.
