Got a recall letter for my truck. Bring it to the dealership, 4 days later they say something is wrong with the PCM (which I suspected due to issues trying to get OBD codes) that is keeping them from correcting the recall. They order a new PCM and now they can’t get it programmed. Going on a week now and they are still working with the manufacturer on a fix, but starting to wonder what happens if they can’t fix it.

As it stands now, the nature of the recall makes the truck unsafe to drive. What are my options here? Preemptively getting my insurance involved? Contacting a lawyer?

Feel like I’m going to get screwed here.

Maybe start with asking nicely for a loaner vehicle. If they refuse, contact the manufacturer. If they refuse, dial dalfred.

Tell the dealership to give you a loaner, and get them to order a new PCM. Sometimes parts are defective out of the box. Service managers are assholes, and it's easier to stick your shite in the back of the lot than deal with a hard to solve problem

How about work with the dealership? Insurance, lawyer? Why? See what they can do. Why don’t you ask them? You sound like someone who is a pain in the arse to deal with.

Most manufacturers have a service hotline, so if this goes on much longer give the factory a call. If the dealership is having difficulty diagnosing the problem, the factory will send a troubleshooter to assist in solving the problem.

The factory will fix the problem.

I haven’t been demanding or given them a hard time about anything. Not when they didn’t even look at my truck for the first 3.5 days, even though they said it’d be done over the weekend. Even though they gave me the run around on a loaner (which I requested in a respectful manner) for 3 days, I’ve not complained once. Went and got a rental for myself and that’s it.

I’m just trying to get ahead of the game. Have seen people online with this issue on their truck that never got it fixed. Which is whatever as long as the truck runs.

Problem is the recall will spontaneously cause the transmission to downshift to first gear, “possibly resulting in loss of control of the vehicle”.

Sounds like if they can’t fix it, the onus is on the manufacturer.

let them fix it for starters.

there's no law that says they only have a few days to repair.

theyll fix it eventually.

I had a recall issue on a car a few years ago. Got the recall notice a day before leaving on a long road trip with the car. Dealership wouldn't provide a loaner vehicle so I had to rent a car. The national service hotline said they would reimburse me for the rental after I started a case and provided receipts. It took them over half a year to approve the reimbursement, and they would have never done it if I hadn't constantly been hounding them about it.

I believe I got the same recall letter.

So it would be a

Fix
Or
Repair
Daily.

By the way, it is a joke.

My 2013 Ford F-150, knock on wood, has been great and no major engine issues. Bought it brand new and it has over 175 thousand miles.

This is actually my first recall letter.

Call 911 and file a police report for theft. Then call an attorney.

If you rented a vehicle on your own, that puts you at a disadvantage. I would say that obviously, your best bet is to work this out with the dealership. I would let them know that since you weren't able to get a loaner from them, you have had to go out and get a rental vehicle....they probably have some cheap rates that they can set up for you, if nothing else. I would probably consider checking up with the manufacturer if you aren't getting satisfaction dealing with the dealer directly.

It does sound to me like you probably haven't had a frank conversation with them and that would be the first step.

I am guessing its a Ford???

I remember hearing where the wiring harness where the PCM plugs into the main wiring harness was bad about shorting out and having bad pin connections.
Make this suggestion to them.

Demand to speak with the owner of the place and demand the service manager assign another 'tech' to look at your vehicle.

Sometimes the dealership(s) will have an inexperienced 'tech' working on vehicles trying to save a few $$$.

There are two words that every dealership shudders to hear...that is 'lemon law'.
If they can't get your vehicle fixed within reasonable time, threaten them with lemon laws.

I guarantee that when they hear those two words, they will get to hopping.

Keep us informed.

It’s a 2013 F-150 (115k miles). Never had issues before this and love the truck.

Tried getting loaner through the dealership but they didn’t have any available and would charge me $30/day to use it once they got one. Got a better deal going through enterprise with my employer discount. Didn’t have time to wait around for them bc my commute is over an hour and didn’t have any other options.

The dealership has contacted ford directly but haven’t gotten a response. Got the manager to try to expedite a response, but still waiting to hear back.

ETA: From what I can tell, I’m outside of lemon law requirements (think the vehicle has to be <18 months old). And apparently they’ve had “4-5” techs look at it, fwiw.
