But to Travelers' AI, it appeared, my laziness was too big a risk to insure. Its algorithm didn't detect an issue with the foundation or a concern with a leaky pipe. Instead, as my broker revealed, the ominous threat that canceled my insurance was nothing more than moss.

I went to the hardware store, spent 80 bucks on moss killer, hooked the white bottle of chemicals up to the garden hose, and sprayed it on the roof. The whole thing took about five minutes. A few days later, much to my relief, the moss was dying. I thought it was the end of an entirely unmemorable story.

Who knows. Maybe if I'd done that a month sooner, Travelers' technology never would have flagged me, never would've said I was an insurance risk. But one of the deep frustrations of the AI-surveillance age is that as companies and governments track ever more of our lives in ever more detail, we rarely know we're being watched. At least not until it's too late to change their minds.

quote:

In February, Boston's ABC affiliate reported on a customer who was threatened with nonrenewal if she didn't replace her roof. The roof was well within its life expectancy, and the customer hadn't encountered any issues with leaks; still, she was told that without a roof replacement she wouldn't be insured. She said she faced a $30,000 bill to replace a slate roof that experts estimated could have lasted another 70 years. If the Boston homeowner throws out a slate roof with 70 years of life left in it, the insurance company never knows it was wrong to remove it.

Satellite imagery and drone usage has been commonplace in the industry.

Every Tom dick and sally wants a free roof

When virtually every single claim is a lawsuit, this is what you get. It isn’t rocket science. Every time we have a thunderstorm now the roofers are out door knocking trying to sell new roofs.

In all honesty, we should be shooting down any low flying drone we see.

Frick insurance companies and the owners. They are licensed thieves and i hope every last one the owners rot in hell. Insurance is the modern day organized crime.

So emotional. How about you explain how they are thieves? Provide evidence.

This board turns into emotional children when it comes to topics they don’t understand and don’t care to understand.

A lot of moss growing on your roof does seem like a concern.

They called it negligence on the homeowner's part.

quote:

Where there's moisture, there's moss, and if you leave a huge amount of it on a roof for a protracted period, it can undermine the roof's lifespan. A small amount is largely harmless. Still, treating it couldn't be simpler. Sure, I could have knocked out the moss sooner, but life was busy, and so it kept falling (and growing) between the cracks. Finally, in June, weeks before I knew my roof was being surveilled, I went to the hardware store, spent 80 bucks on moss killer, hooked the white bottle of chemicals up to the garden hose, and sprayed it on the roof. The whole thing took about five minutes. A few days later, much to my relief, the moss was dying. I thought it was the end of an entirely unmemorable story.

what is the law on this..if you have one directly over your property?
can you legally destroy it? as long as you break no other laws while doing it?

Depending on whose drone it is, you may get a 3 letter agency visit. They're FAA licensed.

Sounds like Travelers is guilty of some crimes here for coercing people into expenditures that are unnecessary.

how about the bleach that was in the cleaner that probably voided your shingle warranty and made you shingles brittle.

There is no coercion. You’re not required to do business with travelers. A roofs life expectancy from the manufacture doesn’t translate to you not needing a new roof because your 15 years into a “30 year” single

Having moss on your roof is definitely poor upkeep and a not well maintained house. I assure you I never had it long and didn’t need someone else to tell me to remove it
