Travel Board: Middle East Destinations: Where Can the OT Reccomend in the ME?

Looking to take a weekly trip to a safe, yet exciting locale in the Middle East sometime in April.
I'm currently in the Middle East, so flights to neighboring countries are of no issue.
Given the current state of the region, looks like the UAE and Turkey are probably my best bets, unless the more enlightened OTers can recommend other spots.
Here are a few places I've been eyeing thusfar:
Dubai, UAE
Abu Dhabi, UAE
Ankara, Turkey
I realize UAE destinations are more expensive than most, but that's why I appeal to the OT for practical advice.
I basically I'm looking for a place that has a good combination of interesting sites, decently-priced hotels, allows the sale of alcohol, and friendly to westerners.
Any personal travel experience in the area?

Go to North Africa instead. Morroco.

You could just go to Europe and soak up all the Middle Eastern culture

Don't count out Beirut. It's a pretty rocking town when they aren't trying to blow it up. Baalbek has those magnificent Roman ruins and the northern part of the country has a few crusader castles that are interesting. Give it a shot!

Petra, Jordan.
Anywhere in Israel
Anywhere on the Turkish coast (Istanbul, Izmir, etc.)

Of the 3 options you mentioned, Dubai. It's been a few years since I've been, so my info may be outdated.

Mass stabbing just happened there, killing one American.
If you're playing the odds, good time to go.
