remember a time when parents actually raised their kids and taught them skills that would benefit them when the left the home. It's a shame that the extent of parenting in 2020 is "he'll learn life lessons in sports.

Or, it lets the kids have fun and enjoy building a sense of camaraderie with their peer group and make good memories.

I do not disagree with the premise of that article at all and in large part I agree and have had that same discussion. BUT not all tournament teams are the same. +good news is you can play local tournaments in Baton Rouge and Zachary. The furthest we will travel is to New Orleans or Lafayette and that will likely be a late summer tournament which these kids have done every year in all stars any way. we held cost down to 500 per kid including practice field rental through July, uniforms and tournament fees. With 11 kids total if we picked up an extra tournament you're looking at a total of about $30 per kid extra. Now there are some organizations who charge an upfront fee of 800 per kid to 2000 per kid because they pay their coaches. We do not do that. This is a group of boys we are vested in and we care about. We are not establishing a youth baseball organization bent on making money. If you look there are great opportunities for even low income children who want that experience whose parents aren't wealthy. Not all TB kids are country club kids

You sound too level headed to be a Bama fan

There are a lot of teams like you describe. In Louisiana most teams play 4-5 months, not year round, and don't travel that much. I don't know what other states do.

This is what I see almost exclusively. We pay about 1000 bucks a year, that includes all the crap they get, hoodies, bat bags, two or three sets of uniforms and entry fees. It is kinda crap that they charge majors teams more, we get the same fields and the same umpires.

They have played some OTC and 2D tourneys, but they make you play up in age class. There are some good teams in those, then some bad ones. Not a lot of middle ground, but they are a great way to get some reps in for the kids without spending a bunch of money.

Home team is winning by a few runs. Visiting team is batting with two outs and a 2-2 count on the batter. About 6 minutes left in the game. Home team coach makes a pitching change. Visiting team coach and fans are going crazy calling the home team coach “soft.” Batter gets a hit, but the next batter gets out a couple minutes later. Time expires while home team is batting. Visiting team coach and fan go even more crazy

Ask those same visitor parents how they would like a full 6 inning game in 10U ball. Then they’ll complain about being at the park til 4am

Schedule’s out for this weekend, son’s team has to play a team ‘playing up’...and that generally sucks. There are 4 divisions in U14 and my son’s team is playing in the top (gold) bracket. You know this damn U13 team is going to bring it. After that it’s a top ~65ish team in the country from Augusta. Ouch.

And these coaches they are paying.. What kind of experience do they normally have?

Usually more than the dads, and it’s not just about experience, it’s about convenience for the parents.

Let’s the dads chill and drink beer in the parking lot while they pay these young bucks to coach the team.

You see these kids umpiring AAA games, middle school and some high school games that are terrible, but there’s such a shortage on umpires just like coaches, they let just about anyone do it.

Just have to pass a background check and take a few classes and you have a job

i coach my kids school team. Last night we had a kid called out getting into second trying to stretch a single. The second baseman took the throw about ten foot ahead of our runner, he touched the bag then tried to throw home. The imp called it out as a force

Umpiring is horrible at these tournaments! You would think with the amount of money paid to these shitty directors, that they could at least have umps that know the rules of the game!

Rules are generally misapplied, and the coaches do a poor job at times at communicating what they are seeing. The biggest ones I see are obstruction and interference. They are completely misunderstood by a lot of umpires.

Balls and strikes are bad sometimes, but I don't want them squeezing the zone on a youth pitcher. And the calls are generally consistent, only one time in my sons games have I seen an obvious miscarriage behind the plate. It was awful.

Safe/ out calls are generally pretty good in my opinion. Yes, every parent is going to scream, but they are right the vast majority of time.

That is a whole can of worms. On one hand I don't want them calling ticky tack balks....but on the other hand you can't arbitrarily decide to call some and not all. But when kids that are just getting their legs under em throwing strikes, I hate them getting rattled with balk worries. This goes for our team and our opponents, anything that waters down the game needs to be discouraged.

Hell, I think the USSSA should not allow leadoffs until 11u any way. 9 and 10 would be a much better sport without the constant steals, balks, walks, wild pitches and passed balls. Not having to worry about runners would make the game better for everyone and speed the game up so that they play more than 3 innings.

Yes, had my first coach pitch experience recently. I believe final score was 23-17. It was the most nonbaseball experience ever. It is basically whoever has the most aggressive runners.

can't wait to see all the homeruns that their babies hit. you know.......the ground ball that gets through the infield and 9 errors are made before their baby crosses home plate.

good 8 year old coach pitch is a ball. Bad coach pitch is miserable. But there are teams that can throw it around and stop that baserunning junk.

But youre correct, generally they cant and coaches just run em until they score.
