That's for sure. But there are multiple levels of 'Travel Ball'. I understand why the lower levels would get a bad rap. Because it IS mostly buying your kids a ring by playing against no competition in some weirdly named world series.
But at the highest level of competition, you'll find that only the most genetically gifted AND talented AND hard working kids make those teams. I know my nieces played at this level for softball and their travel team had all D1 offered kids. In athletics... talent means much more than hard work. If you don't have the genetics in you, then it doesn't matter how hard you try, you still won't be near as good as someone who is gifted.

I’m not really impressed with any D1 girls sports for several reasons, one of them is it’s not really representative of the best athletes, there is a straight/dike pyramid system in girls sports that forces out a lot of good straight girl athletes as age and skills grow, they’re sick of being around it, constantly being hit on and attempts to try and convert them, another reason is to fill out rosters to protect Title IX $

My Grandfather was a SF agent in Nola for 35 years. I don’t understand where the mistrust comes from as far as income potential
. I also don’t have to ever go into the office if I chose not to. If I want to go on vacation or go play golf I can. My team all makes 60k plus, and I have 6 of them. It’s just a weird thing to hate on.

someone very close to me is an agent. they have 5 employees and all make way more than teachers but like you said...ot acts like the agents are lucky to make that
and yea the freedom is awesome, especially after 8-10 years and really especially when you get into your 50s and hire an office manager. thats why so many stick around past 70, raking while only working 1 day a week
we may disagree on travel ball(mainly because context is hard to explain on here) but i got your back on the SF stuff.

Genetics play a huge part in athletics
That’s why it’s so popular with short and/or slow upper middle class whites

my daughter played (I played at LSU,) after a couple of “showcase” tournaments I quickly realized what was going on, the people in the tents offering scholarships weren’t even watching the games and weren’t necessarily with college softball programs, they were there looking for warm bodies to fill rosters to satisfy Title IX quotas, my daughter used to get cold calls from all over the country from schools offering partial scholarships, again, they weren’t making these offers based off her athletic ability, we have a friend that has a national championship water polo ring from USCw that can’t even swim, never stuck a toe in the pool

Travel ball- id the kid enjoys it. Do it. Simple as that. While i dont agree with what travel ball has become, is it so bad for a family to enjoy a weekend at the ballpark?
I say this as someone who has never been to a travel ball tourny

its not, but i also understand why people do not want their kids to get into it or think its crazy.
for our oldest they do their best to be every other weekend and its only 12 or so a year. but now that i have 2, it can become over whelming.
it can be a lot and i totally get why some dont want to be involved. I also get why some go watch a AA tournament and think WTF are these parents paying for
now i do think people are completely naive (even more than the whole SF thing we were discussing) when it comes to thinking a kid that plays nothing but rec ball compares to kids that are playing on the really good teams in high level AAA and majors teams. the difference between a AA team and a high level AAA team or a majors team is massive. Im talking 30-1 type score massive.
high level competitive sports have jumped the shark for sure, but there is no going back and 1 parent trying to make a stand just ensures their kid is left behind unfortunately.
i dont have to like what travel ball has become to acknowledge the realities.

Used to be flatbills and oakleys. Pit vipers are just the new cool shades (I think they’re gay af)

i get thats not some of yalls deal, some kids love that shite and some parents like doing what their kids love.
There’s a very large portion that do it that don’t do it for this reason. They think treat their kid is the next superstar and feel like they need to do this to get him to the next step. And the kid probably won’t even stay on his high school team.

See it’s parents like this that ruin athletics for young people. “Child left behind”, good god, it’s athletics likely not their career. It’s from this line of thinking when little Johnny doesn’t make his high school sports team/or realizes he won’t start the parents are shopping for anywhere he can play within an hrs drive. Now what type of life lessons is that teaching the kids?

My girls played U9-U18 and U11-U18 club soccer. Played in Louisiana and Texas leagues some seasons. They really enjoyed it when younger, but when the U15 year hit, they continued to play largely because their high school coach expected it. The high school roster was nothing but club players. Most parents had realistic expectations about what they were getting from it, but there were always those parents who wanted to brag that their daughter played “college” soccer, even if that college was some institution that nobody had ever heard of.

hold on... so a parent who actually can look around and see...hey may not like this but its the reality...is the issue?
yall are the ones that keep bringing up that its not the end of the world if a kid doesnt make hs team....and i didnt say it was. but some kids actually want to play in HS and if they are willing to put in the work, wtf is wrong with spending the money(if you can afford it) to allow him to be the best he can be?
i can tell may of yall are some low achieving mother frickers. yall have no concept of sacrifice and hard work, thats for damn sure.
Its fine if you dont like travel ball or dont like hs sports at all, thats all good....but for some kids, its important to them. and just because you play hs sports doesnt mean you dont care about academics either.

and local rec leagues suck. if you havent been around one in years... you have no clue.
Pretty sure they don’t in the Acadiana area and sw LA. Lots of kids play both travel and rec but I know a few of the better ones that just play rec and if the kids I’m talking about keep growing at a normal rate and just play rec/all stars they will make the HS team at 2 good baseball programs
