I always laugh at some of these travel teams when I see they have almost as many "coaches" as players on the team.

1 dad for every 2 players
Coach to his players: this is how we did it in the big leagues son.

It's important to put your shades over your cap the exact way. Makes you look professional. If you're one of the football coaches, don't forget your 600 cards with all the plays on them.

As someone who played travel ball and now is umpiring I can say that the parents have gotten worse. I did 7U coach pitch and that was the worst group of parents I have ever seen. I had one parent tell me "you are ruining it for the kids" 5 minutes later the son went up to her and told her he was tired and wanted to go home. Another coach threatened to take me out in the parking lot. Their are a lot of good teams that teach kids the right way. You will also find teams that aren't teaching the right things. It should always be about teaching kids to play the game the right way. Not for parents/coaches to re-live the glory days.

I was in a fast food joint last year, three guys in in what looked like matching coaches garb were seated behind me. Their discussion was as serious as death, because of the technical level I thought they were from a high school or possibly a college team, then it hit me all the 7 and 8 year olds running around the place was their team.

they also practice for several hours a day several times a week....
I've seen some local travel ball teams have 4 hour practice 3 times a week and then 2-5 games on Saturday if they advance.... that some point it is just too much.
2 weeks ago the local HS team had tryouts for its C Team ( 7th and 8th graders). Of the 32 kids who came out they took 16. Of the 16 that made the team, only one had not been playing travel ball regularly.

quote:ok? That doesn't explain much, how of the 32 played baseball on a regular basis outside of travel ball? How many tried out just to try out? How many tried out after not really playing baseball?

Those numbers give us no information....

Legion Ball is real ball. 9 inning games 4 times a week all summer. No practice, everything was paid for by the post. No politics as the coaches are a couple of old vets with no kids on the team who only care about winning and beer.

bet that guy claims he played 3 years of minor league ball and had got a 1 week call up in the majors. Looking at that truck and that description you gave I bet he is an arrogant prick.
Yep, and a toe injury kept him from being the next George Brett.

The best part is the "coaches" dressed up as 13 year old kids with their flat bills, neon UA socks, wrist bands, and Oakleys.

This is the funniest shite. Nothing better than seeing a grown arse man dress like this. These dudes are total tools and make up about 60% of the coaches.

Honestly, what are the chances a kid makes it professionally bc he played travel ball? Especially when you add international players in the mix. As posted before, I think it's a way for the parents to live vicariously through their kids

most travel ball coaches couldn't do shite on the diamond when they were young. they watched videos and studied and live vicariously through their young athletes.

I will concede that the number of reps a kid gets directly impacts their ability to play the game. In other words, kids who play travel are getting more at bats, more time in the field, more time on the mound (not always good), which in turn makes them for the most part, better players. Most teams will play a minimum of 4 games in a weekend versus our Dixie Youth schedule which is 16 games before All Stars.
The down side to this, in addition to overuse injuries, is how many good athletes burn out and give up (mentally or physically) long before high school? If it ain't fun, why do it? Let the kids be kids

No better than if he didn't.
