My dad worked superfund sites. They would scrape the top few feet of dirt of toxic waste sites, load it on a train and take it to Bama to burn it in an incinerator. They literally burn toxic dirt in Alabama.

Interesting! In early-90s, I was on a co-op (analytical tech) remediation project in Prichard, Alabama (where I-165 would soon pass) and we dug up soil, contaminated by dumped dry-cleaning chemicals over decades, and trucked it to Michigan for incineration.

The Poo Poo Choo Choo!!

I remember this from a Louisiana History class where the professor brought the newspaper to class:

SLUDGE TRAIN OOZES BACK,TO BALTIMORE'S CHAGRIN
By Fern Shen November 21, 1989

The sludge is back and Baltimore's got it. The 61 open rail cars of human sewage sludge that traveled throughout the South for six weeks in an unsuccessful search for a quiet dumping ground returned to Baltimore early yesterday, stopping on a railroad siding in a wooded state park just outside the city. But the "poo poo choo choo," driven out of Louisiana and Mississippi by local residents who raised a stink about the waste's foul odor, is not likely to receive a warm welcome home.

Although Baltimore officials still haven't figured out what to do with the sludge, neighbors of the troubled sewage treatment plant that generated it are saying they don't want it back, either. "We have been fighting for 10 years to have the landfill closed and the sludge taken out. The last thing we want is for it to come back," said Guido Guarnaccia, an official of the Wells-McComas Citizens Improvement Association.

Lest the sludge return to the Back River treatment plant east of Baltimore, or the Norris Landfill on the plant site, members of Guarnaccia's group have kept a 24-hour watch on the 80-year-old plant. Homemakers have been watching from their windows, volunteers have been peering through binoculars and a security guard paid by Guarnaccia's group has been monitoring the treatment plant's gate.

shite!!! (Pun intended)....

I was just going to post about the same story happening in Louisiana back in 1989-1990.

Exact same story. Louisiana got stuck with a shite filled train. National news called it the 'poo poo choo choo'

Lesson? The shite never stops fellas

We have thousands of square miles of desert out west. Dry, hot desert and sand. Why isn’t this stuff going out that giant litter box?
