Yes, the probability of being successful, having a better paying job, one that is easier on the body, and maybe with greater long term stability is greater with a college degree in a major that has some history of being employable. However, at this point in time a large percentage of those going to college do not belong in college, they do not finish, or finish with degrees with little to no value in the job marketplace. It would be better for these people, their parents, and the economy if they were identified earlier in their life, and directed into training for a skilled trade. We are wasting money with remedial programs that try to keep students in college, and increase graduation rates, these people should have never attended college in the first place.

That % very well may be high, although I kind of doubt it is.

What I take exception to is the baws on here who say you can become as welder , plumber, etc. and make make like 100k within a couple years. The numbers do not support that at all.

The average plumber and welder make about $20/hour.

My job is currently paying electrician's helpers $16/hr
That's to put in lighting systems and circuits in an air conditioned space.

16 an hour is a barely liveable wage

If you want to make $250k you have a better chance to do it by opening a successful small business.

You do realize doctors and lawyers are small business owners right?

You CAN make 250k as an electrician or a doctor. You are a lot more likely to do it as a doctor.

I agree about guys that have only been at it a couple of years. Trades and like a lot of jobs. If you’re a great employee and have an aptitude for what you do there’s a good chance of upward growth and a lot more money. Like most jobs it comes down to work ethic and a little luck doesn’t hurt.

Most businesses fail within 5 years so a small percentage. Most people making over 250k are lawyers and doctors and bankers not electricians no matter how bad you people want them to be.

You seem to be saying that trying to start your own business is a waste of time and money, if you cant get a college degree there is no point in doing anything else, and you have no hope of being wealthy unless you are a doctor or lawyer. Fortunately we have had a large segment of America that believed in themselves regardless of what the odds were myself included.

Not all bankers start savings accounts at Capital One dumbass. People that work at I'd and Goldman are bankers too. Those are the people I'm talking about.

Some are. Most aren’t. You do realize that I’m a small business owner and might just have a clue what I’m talking about, right?

That's not what I said at all. I'm simply pointing out that 99. 9% of non college educated workers don't make a quarter million dollars a year despite what this board believes.

Just because youre a small business owner doesn't mean you understand macroeconomics. You may very well understand YOUR small business.

And the average doctor makes $179k. Average. Which is a lot less than the pot of gold that many people believe they make. Add in the debt they have to take on to become a doctor and it’s not quite so attractive.

The average salary for a lawyer is $139880 so they aren’t quite the golden goose either.

So now we're saying making 20/hour is better than 180k because the guy making 35 grand doesn't have student loans.

I'm really don't understand why you would die on this hill of an idiotic take. That means 50% of doctors make over 150k/year. even if you take on 200k of debt to obtain that your ROI is really, really good and the risk is minimal.

No one in this or the other thread said that. What people are saying is that it’s possible to make a good living for most and for some who are willing to take on risk there can be great rewards and that a college degree isn’t the end all be all that so many people in this country believe it is.

Just Goldman has 37k employees, and every major bank has a huge commercial banking division. That's irrelevant to the conversation, but it doesn't make what you said any less dumb.

No we aren’t and you obviously don’t have a clue how much trades are paid. $20 and hour is entry level here for an apprentice electrician. That’s for a kid starting out.

You have a way of putting people down that disagree with you. Do you think that you’re that intellectually superior to others because that’s exactly how you come across in your post.

The guy that thinks he’s the smartest guy in the room generally isn’t.

You hate the truth Jethro?

I take it you're a banker at some Wells Fargo branch.
