It seems the law reads only if it's for legit ag purposes in the course of doing business, not to bushhog your cousins property 10 miles away

People are dumb, we would move 6-row stuff on th tractor, I've had all kinds of near misses and ran a friend of mine in the ditch when I was 14.

To the OP,
As stated already, the tractor has the right of way. He needs a hazard sign on the back and he's legal.
However it is not legal to travel on the shoulder. Most do that but it isn't entirely legal.
If the equipment is too large, we escort with farm trucks and call for police escorts for our combines and harvest equipment.
Believe me, I hate taking our equipment on the road but it has to be done. No other way to farm in South LA... too many small tracts of land.
