I see these articles from time to time and notice they never release any of the tow companies names. Any reason for that?

They'll release information after the family is notified. Towboater website on Facebook already has boat names listed and AIS recordings.

Mile Marker 123 is about 500 yards downriver from my house. Heard the horns and boom this morning, thought maybe a barge had gotten loose. Went out with the dogs when one of the horns stayed blasting for well over a minute. It wasn’t very foggy. Search vessels everywhere right now.

Sorry to hear of this.

That water is cold, muddy, and moving pretty good.

The River is up to 15 feet at Carrollton.

Doesn’t sound like a visibility issue, lots of things can go wrong mechanically plus there’s always human error.

Bad news.

The RC Creppel was the boat that sank. Trying to gain membership of the facebook pages to get the other boat information.

More info from Coast Guard press release a little while ago...sulfuric acid in barges...

Prayers go out to all involved

quote:

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector New Orleans received a report at 5:37 a.m. that the towing vessel RC Creppel and the towing vessel Cooperative Spirit had collided and that four members of the RC Creppel are missing. The Cooperative Spirit was reportedly transiting up bound on the river when it entered a barge fleeting area and allied with barges before colliding with the towing vessel RC Creppel. The collision caused the RC Creppel to sink and barges to breakaway.

quote:

The RC Creppel was pushing two barges carrying sulfuric acid. One of these barges was damaged in the incident and reportedly released an unknown amount of vapor into the air. The source of the release is secured. A safety zone from mile marker 121 to 123 has been issued and traffic is closed to vessels in that area.

The RC Creppel was 72x30. 2000 HP.

The Cooperative Spirit is 200 x 54. 10,500 HP

A much bigger boat ran over a smaller boat that was fleeting barges. Don’t know if he was making up or standing by.

The big tug was pushing upstream. The crew may not of even seen him coming.

RC Creppel was making 16 headed downstream. Wasn't fleeting. Headed to industrial locks and then to Pascagoula. Unless specific permission was given by the RC to the Cooperative Spirit to continue, they should have held up below the point. SB traffic has the right of way in the river.
