Baw, great effort but,
Haole is two syllables,
So not a haiku

A simple edit would fix it

Those trashy haoles
Beautiful landmark ruined
No stairway for you

or

Trashy damn haoles
Beautiful landmark ruined
No stairway for you

That worked. I didn't realize haole rhymed with ahole. But we got fr33manator poetry out of it so it's a win.

I have hiked those stairs as well. There is a series of WW2 lookout bunkers up there.

No! Why do people abuse these cherished and sacred landmarks built by the U.S, Navy all the back in the 40s? I mean, they were stairs for Pete’s sake! STAIRS!! Who does that? I’ll tell you who. Those white devil tourists. Apologies to all of the people who live there who have 5% indigenous Polynesian ancestry but kind of look indigenous (because they have 95% Japanese or Korean or Chinese mixed ethnicities.) Sorry we destroyed the sacred stairs that haven’t been open for decades that meant so much to your culture.

How do we know it was tourists leaving trash and such on them when they were open and not locals?

Because Instagram

But really, locals are going a bit NIMBY over people going through their neighborhood to get to the stairs. Plus the stairs haven’t been maintained and are falling apart.

Considering it isn't safe, and I heard horror stories from my guide last summer, it is about time.

It's pronounced "how-lee".

It doesn't rhyme with ahole. At all. Not even slant.

Although it is an anagram of ahole.

Yes, since it's so notoriously difficult to get. You should feel lucky.

Another issue with those stairs is that there's no place to park your car to walk to the entrance point. The entrance point is in the woods behind a neighborhood. The neighbors get pissed off when people park their cars on their street or if they see you walking through their neighborhood with backpacks on.

There's a road to get to the entrance point, but it's gate off and only the security guards can use it. If you go do the hike you have to make sure the security guard is not sitting in his truck underneath the interstate overpass.

If you go to good maps and type in "Ke Kula 'o Samuel M. Kamakau," look east and you will see the security truck by the H3 overpass.

I did it in 2014 on a 7 day layover courtesy of your tax dollars. It's a good hike, you need to be in shape before tackling it. The view is well worth the effort.

We had someone drop us off and pick us up. The guard was there, but once he found out we were military, I'm mean AF, not military, he let us go up.

And there you have it.

Literally just a bunch of kahuna Karens who pick and choose who can enjoy the island.

They should leave it open, but change the sign.

You are breaking the law by attempting to climb these stairs. If you do so anyway, you agree to pay the $10,000 fine, and be charged with a felony, punished by being chained in a field for 5 years, eating whatever family members agree to bring you.

The issue is that a fat chick would insist on attempting it and need to be rescued. A rescue there would be very expensive. Maybe have each person who goes up pay a fee and put a $2000 refundable deposit down (on a credit card). I'm sure a rescue would cost more, but that'd discourage fat Karen's from trying it.

you could literally say the same thing about 17,000 other places around the planet that don't have pancake flat geography.

Not many that difficult in a very high traffic tourist area.

Tell me you never seen Stairway to Heaven without telling you've never seen it.

StH is in a major tourist city and GC is in the middle of no where. It in no way compares to the Grand Canyon. Most rescues at the Grand Canyon are fairly easy and routine, a hiker on a wide and well maintained trail gets overheated or has another medical issue. Usually easy to get to the hiker and get him/her out.

Rescues from Stairway to Heaven are complicated and may require a helicopter and some very dangerous flying.

Open up StH to public hiking would be a disaster. Too many out of shape folks would try it and need rescue. The very young and very old, with enough water, can navigate the GC from top to bottom and back up, you need to be in good shape for StH and you still may not make it.
