NWS New Orleans @NWSNewOrleans
Confirmed EF-1 tornado in Walthall County near Dexter. Max winds of 110 mph. Thanks to @NWSJacksonMS for conducting the survey on our behalf. #lawx #mswx

ETA: just a guess... but I figure NWS Jackson was checking to see if this Walthall Co. tornado connected to the long track tornado that went between Purvis & Hattiesburg... why Jackson did the survey instead of New Orleans

I'm still in awe at some of Alabama's straight-line wind events that occurred yesterday.

LINK
quote:

Pike/Barbour County storm survey results: Straight line winds estimated as high as 85-95 mph resulted in a wide area of damage consisting of snapped & uprooted trees, some onto structures. Awnings, overhangs, roofing material, and carports were also blown off some structures.

Chilton/Coosa/Tallapoosa County storm survey results: Wide swath of straight line winds estimated at 80-90 mph in Chilton County and 70-80 mph further east. Assessment ongoing at this hour. #alwx

I grew up in Mississippi and lived there till moving a couple of years ago but still keep up with the weather and listen to scanners and such.

I traveled thru the state alot for work and have been to most of these small communities like Soso and Bassfield.
