Those trees are all still standing, less than 30 feet away from that destroyed nursing home.

The Tri-State tornado of 1925 traveled 219 miles. So far tonight's tornado has traveled about 190 miles. If it stays on the ground past Madisonville (it likely will) and if is treated as a single tornado, then we will have a new record. Remember this night. #kywx #tornado

U.S. Tornadoes
@USTornadoes

Massive long tracking tornado from Eastern AR to Central KY continues. Tornado emergency for areas out ahead of it in Hopkins and Caldwell county KY right now. This will take a while to survey but good chance one of not the longest tornado tracks in the past decade if not longer.

That'll be the key. I'm not sure it will be.

Are these long track systems typical in December? Seems like they are usually more springtime?

Long track tornadoes arent typical to anytime of year. Its rare to have this amount of heat as far north, but for a combo of complicated reasons the gulf is warm and flow has been pushing that air north for days.

Then you get a strong December storm system bringing cold air aloft. Warm under cold wants to rise and the storm system brings the spin.

Typically this would just cause a big line of storms with embedded tornadoes but not a lone supercell able to maximize everything.

The problem today was a smaller disturbance that rolled around the main system today. Provided some lift and fired the storm that lead to this, having it mature when the best spin came at it. With no storms below it to cut off the warm gulf air, it can run for a very long time.
