Question for those you spending big money on private school tuition. Are you saving for college too? As a non OT baller certainly seems daunting to have private school tuition, save for their college, and save for your future (on top of all the other cost of living).
Each have a 529 that I’ve been contributing to monthly since they were born. May not cover 100% depending on where they go and what kind of scholarships they receive but I have savings to help with that.

rather play the percentages.
Public school works until it doesn't. New Orleans is safe until you get mugged or murdered. People who are 30-50 yrs old saying public school is just fine because they went there need to take a serious look at the culture of violence and drugs today.
My oldest started in public school until 2nd grade. He ended up in a horrible teacher's class who literally was unhinged. He started not liking school and begging not to go. Finally we got it out of him that his teacher scared him because she would yell and turn your desk upside down if you didn't keep it clean enough for her. So we did what any caring parent would do and went to see the Principal. Principal literally sided with the teacher and wouldn't move him. So we pulled him and put him in private school. Turns out that teacher ended up getting fired when a different parent put a recording device in their kid's bag and brought it to a board member.
Playing the odds with your kid's lives wasn't something I wanted to do.

This. My kids school experience was a “school within a school” all 4 years. They had a few classes with the “regular” kids (AG/PE/etc). But otherwise every student in their class was a high achiever and they got the best teachers for every subject (advanced classes in middle, AP in HS). Overall their public schools were pretty good anyway.

We have one college fund for both kids to use as needed, it’s also available for them to use for high school tuition, how ever we’re lucky they are both smart enough to get into one of the best charter schools in the state/country.
It’s not a Louisiana 529 plan, it’s an out of state college mutual fund.
I haven’t even touched it yet bc it’s making money, so instead we’ve using his scholarships and TOPS and free money loans for now.

this is me 100%, i can count on 2 hands number of males that graduated out of my 3a HS that is considered one of the best publics. A+ rating.
No "A+ rated" "best public" school has that kind of numbers.
Do you even have any idea who rated them "A+"? Because that is not a high school rating system.
You made that shite up.

No. Pay the extra property taxes or extra money on a nice house to live in a good area/parish. Private school is wasteful, unless you live in a crappy area/parish. Or option 2, move out of the Louisiana shite hole to get to a nicer area.

good friend of mine has 3 kids at Newman (2 HS and 1 in MS). He's paying close to $90K / year in school tuition. His oldest graduates in May and will attend Johns Hopkins with scholarships paying 90% of the tuition.

I believe I estimated LSU all in at $20k per year after TOPS (before Greek fees which would be applicable everywhere). We are looking at $29k at Arky w the 90% out of state tuition waiver for GPA. Fayetteville here we come.

Very few people pay full tuition at Newman unless your name is Drew Brees or extremely wealthy
I know lots of families that have multiple kids at Newman and they definitely cant afford $25k per kid with their salaries.
Newman offers scholarships and financial assistance to just about anyone that can test in

I know the financial officer there. He told me that the majority of checks come from places (old money) other than the actual parents. Some pay it outright. My brother has a kid there and he does it.
Relating to other posts I have seen, I want to mention that part of the reason parents pay for private school and not have money for college, is because they hope that their initial investment pays off for scholarships.
I don't want to bash public schools as there are some very good ones out there, but I like the private school as its about more than the actual education, its the community feel. It's a supporting environment with the teachers and the parents buying into the child's development.
The parents have a reputation to uphold. They care very much about their child's development.

Newman is not a normal school, even by elite Southern private standards. Ivys and Seven Sisters pay to recruit students from there.
Hopkins is also not a normal school. They have an astronomical endowment and recent pledges that pay tuition for the vast majority of their students in perpetuity.
Paying anything to go to Johns Hopkins undergrad at this point is basically announcing to the world, "I am rich, and my kid needed it!"
So, kinda, same as Newman?

Yes. A lot of the tuition comes from the grandparents, old money
