I've never lived with a bunch of dudes.
As a married man with two daughters, I always put the lid and the seat down when I complete my business.
If I have to lift the seat every time I piss, then they have to lift the lid every time they do.

I always piss with the seat down and give a once over with some tp before I flush. Much easier than raising and lowering that shite every time. Leaving a toilet seat up full time is trashier than getting a few drops on the seat when I piss.

So, I left the toilet seat down. As did her two sons.
She never caught on to the fact that we stood and peed thru the toilet seat. But she was really happy that she got her way!
