At some point, the greater good has to come into play. What is good for the majority is an added lane off the bridge and I don't care what's in the way - you've got to go. Eminent domain....

I think it needs to happen, but another bridge near Plaqumine should have priority over this...

A new bridge should be THE priority. While correcting the fricktardery that is the Washington Exit/MergeOfDeath would help a good bit, the main problem is that the system just can't handle the sheer volume of local AND pass-through traffic. With the way the interstates wind through the middle of everything, you simply can't build an intra-city loop that would pull enough traffic off the interstates to matter unless it:

1. Reaches as much of the area as the interstates
2. Is all concrete (thus more durable and better maintained)
3. Has no traffic lights
4. Has the same speed limit

... and even then it would be totally fricked if there is a wreck on one of the interstates.

So the first priority must be a new bridge. After that you have to build out a southern loop (from at least between Lobdell & Gross Tete, down to St. Gabe, across to Prairieville then up to Livingston). Make Hwy 30 4 or 6-lanes up until it becomes Nicholson (maybe have the extra two lanes peel off at the Nicholson/Burbank intersection) then run some roads west out of the Brusly/Addis corridor to give relief to that stretch of LA 1.

Those are the things that will draw traffic away from passing through Baton Rouge and that re-direction is what will make the most long-term and meaningful impact.

After that they should look at things like Washington Street and the bizarre way they added the third lane to 10 at the 10/12 intersection.

Same building.

Think minimall.

They share a wall.

Yeah, that makes much more sense than diverting the traffic around Baton Rouge via a southern bypass.

It wouldn't be the first time grown arse adults made the worst possible decision.

It just seems worse when it's tax payer money being spent.

Yes, a new bridge and a bypass is huge and yes it is necessary for a solution to this traffic nightmare.

But time isn't on our side. The bridge and loop would take a decade or slightly less time, but we need hrlp now. The I-10 desl could be completed in three years.

We need both in the worst way. Figure out how to pay for it and let's roll..

Just got back from Rivercenter and the public meeting.

Good job by the PR people and DOTD's team. The meeting was very informative.

Some key items

Lengthily process. At best three years to start work.
There is enough right of way to add a lane to I-10 from 415 to Essen with possibly a few small exceptions but won't know for sure until they survey.
They could do the widening and keep Wash St ramp.
If loop is constructed traffic congestion would increase around 20% by 2032 anyway and we know it's unacceptable now.
Consequently, I-10 must be widened in conjunction with other projects.

I suggest those interested go to one of the other events. One tomorrow in Port Allen or Thursday in BR

In was there. The post presentation activities seemed like they were designed by a 3rd grade teacher. This project needs to happen, but so do a dozen other projects. Odds are, none will happen because the money just doesn't exist. It gets siphoned off to unions and graft far too early in the process for this to ever come to fruition.

Our facilitator seemed fine and the people at our table were involved. Some good ideas were shared.

I also liked the large plan and engineers available.

Goddamn, this isn't the 1950s. This is an anti-labor administration in a right to work state. What are you talking about?

The problem is not the concrete and blacktop that the interstate is made of. The problem is drivers.

I agree the drivers are retarded, but you act like that's going to change one day. What is your traffic solution? More drivers Ed classes

Someone needs to have the courage to do away with the Washington St. exit AND offend a few merchants and residents in Southdowns. No one has that courage, so those of us forced onto the horribly designed and horribly maintained existing roads already overflowing with single-digit IQ distracted drivers are only going to have a more miserable commute to look forward to. Thank the Lord retirement isn't that far away.

Any of the local businesses are just SOL in my opinion. Rent was likely cheap in an area under the interstate and they made good money for many year. Now, they need to get out of the way for the greater good.

Another out of the box idea... why not have the state put a toll on the MRB in BR to finance the construction of the new proposed bridge in south EBR and Ascension?

Or just put it on 18 wheelers as they would rather pay a $5-10 toll than diverting 100's of miles.

tbh I don't know what closing the Wash exit would achieve. Doesn't look like many cars use it, and everyone would still have to merge out of that lane.

How about put a toll on the proposed bridge. I cross the river in both donaldsonville and br multiple times a week, and sometimes multiple times a day. I would gladly pay for a sunpass type service to bypass both of those bottlenecks. I've been taking river road home from Port Allen on the BR side the past few weeks because dealing with the cluster is ridiculous.

Per DOTD the exit can remain open and another lane added at the same time.

And it's questionsble if any businesses have to be removed. That has yet to be determined for sure.
