My grandparents' house in Broadmoor, right next to where the Broadmoor theater used to be. Only time in my life I felt the earth shake. My grandpa (ww2 vet) thought a bomb had gone off.

I was 6 years old, under the house in Denham helping by dad fix a broken pipe, but really just getting in his way.

He was a pipe fitter who worked in that plant and drew a lottery to be off that day.

I remember it...
It was at the end of the coldest cold snap the city had ever seen. The burst pipe aftermath was ridiculous.

We had 3 straight days of lows in the teens and highs in the mid twenties, with the last night getting down to a reported 8 degrees (they said it was the coldest temperature ever recorded in BR).
The reports were that it was well colder than the coldest possible temperatures for the plant design envelope which led to the explosion.

When the actual explosion happened, I was in my car at LSU near Chimes street. I actually didn't notice the explosion! I had a crappy noisy car and must have just figured I hit a bump.

Was in Lafayette and we felt/heard the boom there. I swear to God. I remember me and my family eating and everybody kind of pausing say "what was that?!"

Read your post in a hurry and saw the "ers" on the end of "looters." I thought you meant to type something else.

Visiting my sisters, one lived off Siegen, the other off Perkins. Rattled the windows at the Perkins location.

Someone posted the local evening newscast last year. Very busy news day. Also has the invasion of Panama and Dutch Morial dying.

Where were you?

Having dinner with my wife and parents at my apartment on Highland Road. My father, an Exxon retiree, knew right away the explosion was at the refinery.

A close family friend worked at Exxon. We referred to his kids as cousins because we were so close. It just happened to be a tradition to exchange presents with his family on Christmas Eve at their home in WBR.

I don’t remember if he (family friend) was on his way back from work or if he jumped in his truck and went to the refinery after the explosion.

I was only 4 years old and I don’t remember all of the details, but I remember seeing the giant cloud of smoke after the “boom” from 15 or so miles away. His kids were about my age and they were crying once we realized it was Exxon. It was a horrible day and I remember the adults being extremely worried and making a lot of phone calls.

The explosion, smoke cloud, frigid cold, and my cousins crying are the memories that stuck with me.

I’ll never forget this day.
I was listening to the Saints beat the crap out of the Colts (game was blacked out in
BR). Lost radio signal, then heard a rumble across the roof that honestly sounded like someone running on the roof.
My brothers and I ran outside and saw nothing. The radio came back and we went back in to listen. My pawpaw called to tell us about the explosion. He lived on Chippewa a few blocks from the Exxon entrance.
He said it knocked him off his chair but didn’t do any damage aside from a broken window, if that. It was pretty freaky though.

I was in beautiful St. George when the explosion happened
(Well it wasn't called St. George back then because there was no need, but that is a different thread).

Anyway, that was about 15 miles from Exxon, as the crow flies. I recall pictures rattling on the wall and a bit of shaking.

And it was cold as a motherfricker. I delivered pizzas part-time since i was just starting college and I worked the Friday and Saturday night before the explosion in that ridiculous cold.

2 different times I busted my arse on driveways frozen over due to busted pipes. But since it was Christmas and since it was so cold, I made a killing on tips that night.
