Just think if we could feel a mere refinery blowing up dozens of miles of away and watch our houses rattle quite a bit, can you imagine what a modernized nuclear bomb would be like detonating nearby or even 1-3 hours away?

I was on the road when the blast happened. Passed my dad on the way into the subdivision. He was the operation manager at Exxon at the time. He had been at the refinery all night before due to the extreme cold causing multiple units to shut down. He heard and felt the blast at our house in south br off of highland rd.
Was also friends with the operator who called in the vapor cloud. He was able to stop one truck from continuing on towards the release. He was unable to stop the other truck. I believe it was two contractors killed in that vehicle. A third man was killed in a small out building near the blast. This man went unaccounted for until the next day.
Definitely a day that won't be forgotten in my family.

I remember it well, on the LSU lakes. Exxon looked like Pearl Harbor with all the black smoke. They interviewed some old guy who lived near the plant and he said "I thought it was the Panamas". The invasion of Panama was underway and he thought they'd bombed us. Cold as frick, we had a death in the family that day. Not a good Christmas.

I was on the way to the Saints game from Lft, as we drove through BR on the way to NOLA, my dad says, “something is wrong with that refinery”, noticing the flares he took an ominous tone. Fast forward to the drive back from the game and it had exploded. I was about 10, staring out of the window in shock as my dad had basically called it.
