You can rank as many astounding want. Where you end up depends on a lot of factors and involves the use of an unknown computer algorithm that combines all of those factors and picks the best result.

It's actually a pretty straightforward algorithm. The only factors it takes into account is your rank list and the residency program's rank list of the applicants they interviewed that season. If you have a program as your top spot and the program has you ranked high enough and hasn't filled the positions with applicants higher on their list yet, then you get the spot. If they're already full, then it does the same thing with your next choice.

What if you don't like where you get matched to? It's not the military, can you tell them to suck a big one, I'm not living in BFE Iowa?

It's like any other contract once the match is done. You can revoke it, but good luck getting another residency spot anywhere near desirable.

"Dale dropped out of college, said he was joining the family business."

"But you're a medical doctor?"

"I told him that, He just kept saying it's all about who you know."

That was the "Congrats! You matched!" email. It just tells you that you matched.

22 years ago for me, hard to believe its been that long. Those four years of residency were tough, but such a great time. Congrats and good luck on the guys and gals opening envelopes today.

It's a match, so you have to have ranked the place you get selected as well. A lot of ENT's would love to end up going to Iowa FWIW

Its been twenty years since that nervous night. I knew Northwestern wanted me, but they were my second choice.

I got my first choice.

I hope it all goes well for all you young MDs out there chewing your fingernails off this am.

But the good news is that those that DIDN'T match but did SOAP know where they're going already.

To clarify,

You become a physician on graduation day, in about two months.

Match day is to see where you will spend your residency, as a cheaply paid doctor.

Good luck all.

A good family friend of ours was just accepted into LSU vet school. I guess they all happen around the same time.

Is this year or next year when it supposed to really suck?

Something like 5-10 new schools opened ~3-4 years ago?

IDK.
