Today, I fly my flag in honor of...

my uncle, Darrell. For me, I say a prayer to honor my dad's brother, who I never met, but who gave up his life in the invasion of Normandy as a member of the 82nd Airborne.
As kids, at my grandmother's home for family gatherings, a prayer of thanks was always given for his life, and the influence that his bravery and sacrifice had on how my dad and my two other uncles grew up and dealt with the world around them. As a kid, it didn't really register with me, until as an adult, I was able to hold the blood-stained Bible he kept on him that a fellow soldier saved, and who later tracked down my grandmother after he returned to the US to give it to her.
Holding his bible, with his dried blood staining it, that was a cathartic moment for me. His death and how he died representing what the US then stood for, now resonates more strongly with me, and so, today, he is who I honor. Please join me in honoring all who have fallen in service to our country and their belief that the ideals of freedom were worth fighting, and dying for.

Incredible story.
Thanks, all around.

Thanks for your Uncles service!
He was one of the fallen 9000.
My grandfather served in the 82nd during WWII as well and my other grandfather in Pattons army, and my great Uncle was wounded and won the silver star on Guadalcanal.
They were truly the greatest generation and we all owe so much.

I was going to ask this. You could probably get the after action review documents from his unit and find out exactly what happened to him and where he was.
Folks don't realize just how badass those paratroopers were back then. This is coming from someone that was a paratrooper himself. Those guys were just amazing.

I would recommend Those Devils in Baggy Pants by Ross Carter who gives a great first-person account of the 504th PIR in WWII. I assume his uncle wasn't in the 504th unless he volunteered as a Pathfinder because outside those 50 volunteers, the 504th stayed in Italy during the Normandy invasion but even so it is a good account that translates to all the other troopers in WWII.

I was in COSCOM and wore the "leaning shithouse". My company had a single airborne squad. We "belonged" to 18th ABC HHC when they would move we got attached. It was a weird setup.I was an 88M.

For my great uncles ken and george. Ken was deployed in Europe in the princess Patricia infantry and it wasn't good for him. He developed ptsd long before it was recognized. He essentially drank himself to death after ww2. I didn't known him but my grandmother told me he went to war as a happy young man and a musician, came back and never recovered.

A lot of lives have been sacrificed by men of all political leanings in defense of our constitutional republic, rather than in support of a trumped up dictatorship that would ignore the rule of law and destroy it. Please keep the crap on the political board and not in an O-T thread meant honor those like OP's uncle.
I honor WWII vets my father and his two older brothers and younger brother Korean fighter pilot, as well as their six first cousins.
