Do you want to know why the official climate archive is suspect at best? The numbers you see quoted in articles about heatwaves or cold snaps that set records are recorded by NWS into an archive for the entire Weather Forecast Office area. One high, one low temp, etc. for the entire area. Now, you can look up individual weather stations for a given day, but that isn't what articles, and I suspect some research, does.

For example, one of the two official observation sites in Alexandria did record a 104° reading yesterday. The official temp that went into the record for the area was 98°. For the Shreveport area a reading of 103°, likely recorded between official station reports because it doesn't show on the main log, was recorded and it set the daily record for that area.

It is a flaw in the way the official data is recorded in the archive, and I have not found a clear statement as to how it is done.

Another example, on the 20th of June in my area (North AL) we recorded a daily record low of 55°. Another site recorded 54°, both records for the respective observation sites. What got recorded was 61° at the Huntsville International Airport, despite the fact that the average low temp for the area (which is what the archived climate record covers) was nearly 6° lower than what went into the archive.

I thought at first they just recorded the data from that airport as the official record, but that doesn't seem to always be the case.

I had no idea that global warming was happening in 1906. People used to just call it summer back then though I suppose.

The all-time record for Alexandria is 111.9 F recorded on July 11, 1987, but that was recorded at Esler Regional so does it count? If you look at Wikipedia for the city of Alexandria, under climate it only shows 109 F.

Wikipedia also says: The climate is humid subtropical with some continental influence in the winter.

What continental influence in the winter are they talking about?

I suspect they mean that air masses coming down from Canada(over the continental U.S.) play a tempering (mostly cold in the winter) to the annual mean temperature and rainfall. During the summer, mostly influenced by the Gulf as only being about 125 miles south as the crow flies.
