i'll have a beer for dinner and i drink more when my kids are in bed.

If i smoke it's definitely after bedtime.

I'll cuss just enough for my 3 year old to repeat and we'll all laugh. After that we teach them those are "adult" words.

no big deal.

when i am not around i'm sure their little asskholes like their dad

That's why I said "curse like a sailor."

I'm not immune to the occasional curse word myself.

My 5 year old saw me smoking a cigar for the first time a few days ago. He called my arse out, and it was hilarious. He looked at me horrified and with disdain because we've always told him when he sees people smoking that it's bad for you and you shouldn't do it. Trying to explain how cigars are different than cigarettes to a five year old is interesting.

As for alcohol I do drink in front of my kids. Don't see it as big deal as long as you aren't getting drunk in front of them.

I don't cuss in front of them because I don't really want my 5 year old and almost 2 year old getting in trouble at school for cussing (which they would of course). I'll probably relax that a little when they get to be older kids who can understand that it's not always appropriate to use certain words in certain places.

If you drink but hide it from your kids, chances are your kid is going to end up in a mess that's somehow related to alcohol.

Everyone, especially kids, are lured by the "forbidden fruit". Tell someone they can't have something and they are sure to seek it out.

I grew up in a house where my parents drank in front of us, and my mom smokes. There was always beer in the fridge and a stocked liquor cabinet. And I never once thought to try it out or sneak some. At crawfish boils my dad would send me to get him a beer and when I got back with it he'd have me open it and tell me to take a sip if I was curious. So drinking was no big deal and my brother and I understood that it was something that adults did and we were kids.

I had a friend who was brought up baptist and his parents were teetotallers. He spent the night one night and when he saw the beer in the fridge he was shocked. He immediately tried to get me to steal a couple of Miller High Life's and sneak off to go drink them. I just couldn't believe he would suggest such a thing. It had honestly never occurred to me.

I ended up bending under peer pressure and we took one each. After we drank them he started acting what he thought drunk should look like. I was just downhearted that this kid that I had looked up to was such a loser.

The same goes for guns. We had guns in the house, we knew where they all were and they were damn sure loaded. But we knew to touch them without permission was a guaranteed arse whipping. If I ever wanted to look at one of them I just asked my dad and he would unloaded it and tell me all about it.

Deny someone something and it glamorizes it in their eyes. Make no big deal about it and they will take it for granted and move on.

Cigarettes? Trashy as frick.

Cigars, cursing, and drinking? This is the fricking South. I've been doing that since I was 10.

Bunch of pussies anymore. In my day my dad kept the car windows up to keep the smoke in.

I learned all those things by going to Saints games, circa 1967-86. Especially cussing.

This is my approach as well. Never anything more than arse or shite, like get your arse in gear or I am tired of this shite. I rarely curse in front of my kid, but the handful of times I have, it was impactful.

This. I don't normally swear at all in front of people, so it sure gets their attention when I do.

You got to wonder if they realize they are helping idiocracy become reality.

I do all that around my kids but in about 10 years they will be someone else's problem. I will say this, most of my friends with alcoholic parents ended up never drinking.
