And we lose folks of all ages to outlying accidents, congenital conditions, cancers, etc. Statistically this number is a small fraction of our population.
The normal human life span in the US should average well PAST age 80.
Because so many folks make poor lifestyle choices (both by omission & commission), we end up with a lower average death age and plenty of miserable folks for the decade or more before they actually die.
Not to downplay the human aspect of their misery but they are also generally a drain on society (and healthcare specifically) in the final health-compromised portion of their existence.
