I remember reading where James Cameron went down several times and one time they got stuck for almost a day because of some random current that trapped them against the wreckage. frick all that.
That would be it for me.

Debris field discovered in the search area. Being investigated now.

The problem is the strength of the [DeepFlight Challenger] does decrease after each dive. It is strongest on the first dive.
This is telling. One of OceanGate's staff members, Dr. Lochridge reported that there was no non-destructive testing of the hull performed. I would think it would have been prudent to do this at multiple stages: before the first ever dive and after several successively deeper dives.

Yep, it imploded. Ideal considering the alternative

Based on known descent time, the sub lost contact with the support ship before the sub reached their destination.
What depth was the sub when this happened? is that known?

I've read that the titanium cap of the sub is likely all that may remain, or is at least identifiable of any debris. Is that accurate?

The people onboard didn’t even realize it was happening if this is the case. That’s a positive.

catastrophic failure based on a debris field
probably a better way to go than the alternative

And now a Coast Guard press conf on the debris field at 3 ET/2 CT.

Yes sir. Instant death now is the best possible outcome aside of the rescue of course.

I'd much rather go instantly than spend 4 days stuck in a dark Pringles can on the bottom of the ocean waiting for oxygen to run out.

will they be added to the titanic's death count?

Search and rescue crews remotely operating an underwater vehicle discovered a "debris field" near the Titanic while searching for a missing tourist submersible, the U.S. Coast Guard said Thursday, the estimated deadline for when the five passengers may have run out of oxygen in the small vessel.
"A debris field was discovered within the search area by an ROV near the Titanic. Experts within the unified command are evaluating the information," the Coast Guard wrote on Twitter.

My hypothesis is simple. The sub had multiple safety systems. So confident was Stockton in those systems he bragged that the safest place in the world for five people was in that sub. So why didn't the systems kick in? We know there is evidence they never reached the site of the Titanic.
Based on known descent time, the sub lost contact with the support ship before the sub reached their destination. Additionally there was seismic activity which pointed to a violent incident around the time of the loss of contact (I'll admit I had no idea of the capability of those seismic sensors).
Granted my theory is a hypothesis. Until they find that sub my theory is as good as any. I just hope they didn't suffer.
Catastrophic hull failure resulting in implosion.
Oh I was never questioning your theory, I just wanted to hear what you actually thought that happened. I have know theories of my own, I just believed that there was no coming back from them. I honestly was just curious and intrigued because I am a nerd for this type of stuff. It helps me paint a better picture in my head.

Now we can move on to the sea monster speculation part of this.

It may mean they made it to the titanic and the vessel blew up if it’s near the titanic

Wut?
They lost Comms - what 1:45 into the journey? How would they know that?

That's also when the seismometer registered an event. They wouldn't have made it to the bottom yet unless they were descending quicker than planned.

It took 3 to 4 hours to reach the Titanic wreckage. If they blew up a few hours into it then they never reached it.
