Underwater noises detected during search for missing Titanic submersible

quote:

The Coast Guard’s First District reported early Wednesday that a Canadian P-3 aircraft detected underwater noises in the area where crews are looking for the missing Titan submersible and operations were redirected there. Those efforts “have yielded negative results but continue,” the Coast Guard tweeted.

quote:

The Navy dispatched a system — the Flyaway Deep Ocean Salvage System — designed to haul up objects the size of planes and small vessels from the deep ocean floor, a spokesperson said, but it isn’t clear whether the backing band of other specialized technology required to operate is available.

So if the submersible can't dive by itself and is connected to another ship, how can't they bring it back up?

Im trying to wrap my mind around the sub "imploding" and the sheer physics and violence but its difficult.
Gasman explain this to us...

Sudden decompression of pressure vessels is violent beyond imagination.

This one was just for funsies:

They're boating in two 6,000KG winch reels currently. They departed around midnight last night from St. John's NF.

If so, 5-1=4 folks consuming oxygen.

You get ~20% more time to breathe.

That was a controlled, intentional collapse. Every variable that was possible to control was accounted for.

The depths of the ocean that sub was operating in are capable of much worse.

My question is if the tube was compromised, would there have been time for the occupants to realize it or would a tiny rupture have immediately destroyed everything in a split second?

i would think it would be instant, but an outer window on the Trieste, which was the first submersible to explore the Mariana Trench, cracked before they even reached the bottom... they decided to continue going, made it to the bottom, explored for a bit, then came back up...

so basically, i don't know...

It would depend. A significant failure and they would have never known what happened. A crack to a window, another small, undetected flaw that gradually worsened to failure could have given them some warning.

The original submersible that went to Challenger Deep, the Trieste, suffered a crack to an acrylic window while on descent. One of the guys in it said they knew they were fine because they heard the crack. You will never hear the one that kills you.

ETA: Wanna talk about balls? They found the source of the sound by turning off all light inside the sub and shining flashlights out of the window. They would both agree that the noticeable crack on the window was nothing to worry about and decide to continue their mission.

Believe I read at 18 knots.

Regardless, they'll arrive when their O2 supply runs out. Hope for the best regardless

They weren't directly connected via tether. They were connected wirelessly.
