Atlanta is pretty affordable for a city it's size. You'll have comparable amenities and an airport with direct flight options to anywhere that you would want to go. Just live somewhat close to where you work. You definitely won't have to worry about shoveling snow. I don't know as much about Charlotte but could be one to consider.
If you don't need as many amenities and you're just looking for quality of life for cheap, my answer is Roanoke, VA. Great mountain biking and beer scene with just enough restaurant/entertainment to keep you sane. But, traveling anywhere is more inconvenient because of connections and layovers.

Of those choices bama is the best. La is a toilet. Arky has the dumbest people in the country. Ms the nastiest.
Bama is great but has good spots. Fairhope and neighbors are decent and close to decent beaches. Mountain Brook and surrounding areas are good. And some north bama places are good. Hamas greatest attribute is the wide range of areas: Beaches to mountains. I'm not from here and gump fans can be aweful.

I think I'm going to get approached to move to our office there soon, and I was planning to take it. Thoughts on living there?
We've been up here for about 6 1/2 years and really enjoy it, but it's all personal preference. Do you have kids? That makes a big difference.
Like any city, there are pros and cons. There's a lot of great restaurants and breweries, you're in close proximity to a lot of different areas in New England to visit, there's skiing in the winter and beaches in the summer, the public transportation is cheap and convenient, etc.
The downside is that you have to be willing to put up with the winter (we got 10 inches of snow overnight and it's March), but of course the flip side of that is that the summers are incredible. The biggest con is the cost of living. You're either going to have to live outside the city in the burbs or be prepared to live in an apartment, which is an adjustment coming from the south. And then of course you have to deal with Pats fans.

Mississippi, much like Arkansas i presume, is a well kept secret.
Negative stereotypes abound, but traffic is non existent, rent/housing is low, 2-3 hour trips to the redneck resort in Orange beach, people are nice, taxes are low, and believe it or not the MS gulf coast is actually coming around. Bay St Louis to Pascagoula is finally getting their shite together with plenty to do. The only thing i hate down here are the gnats and humidity.

Is it worth moving to Arkansas, Mississippi, Louisiana or Alabama?
Solid. 7/10.

This is true. Mississippi is not nearly as bad as people think. All the things you mentioned are true plus there is a very low crime rate in MS. The cost of living is a huge plus. If you’re into country living and are easy going, MS is a great place. I’d definitely retire there on a ranch out in the middle of no where.
Mississippi is a better place to live than Louisiana. The best part about Mississippi are the people. I’ve never met a person from MS that wasn’t really nice & down to earth. Even douchy ole miss people are cool once you get past that layer of bs between LSU and OM.

CFDoc,
Preaching the truth about Madison.
Rankin County folks are more down to earth. But we do have far more rednecks. Take the good with the bad.

Relative to Boston, most places are going to be very cheap.
If you can, try to live abroad. My recommendation: Lisbon, Portugal. One of the cheapest places I've visited in Europe but an amazing city with access to some of the best beaches in the world.

Depending on your career yes it’s worth it. Just move to rural area with 20 min of a larger city if you enjoy the food and activities of a larger city without the cost of living. Northwest Arkansas, Nashville, Tn, Tuscaloosa or Birmingham areas, Tupelo or Madison, Ms are all decent areas that you could find a place fairly close or even in the towns/cities for way less than Boston.
My parents bought a 2 story house 4br 3 ba on 6 acres for 300k just 5 miles south of Tuscaloosa

Louisiana has one of the highest rates of infectious diseases as well as STD spreading.
Food is great though.
If he can afford to live in Boston I doubt he would be hanging out with the particular low income groups that cause this problem.
MS isn’t much better and I’ve been with many women over the years here and never caught anything. Just avoid the thugs and white trash groups

NWA is tGOAT my grandparents lived in Rogers before my grandmother got Alzheimer’s and they moved to assisted living in Nebraska near some family. Loved it up there. Perfect combination of beautiful area, plenty to do both outdoors and in city, nice people, and relatively affordable.

I'd opt for ATL. You're in for some major culture shock if you move to any of those places you listed. Even the more populous cities within those states aren't going to have nearly as strong of a transplant presence as ATL. That may sound unimportant but try moving to a place where you stick out like a sore thumb and come back to let us know how that works out for you.
There's still great value to be found in ATL. The NE side of the city is getting up there in price a bit but the N and NW sides are still plenty affordable and nice places to live, and certainly a shite ton cheaper than the Boston area.

New Orleans. Just like everyone else from New England.

Hornbeck Louisiana. Land is cheap and close to hookers that hang around Fort Polk. It's also the gateway to Toledo Bend.
