Ok, but do you tip on the pre tax amount, or total bill amount?

I generally do that for adequate service. I'll go 20-25% if the service is excellent, and 15% or so if it isn't great. Thankfully, I've never had just absolute dogshit service to where I'd want to tip lower (or zero).
I'm the same.
If absolutely nothing stood out to me...18% it is. It can be adjusted up or down from there based on anything that was abnormally good or bad

This is a great question.
I tip on the entire bill, including the tax. Now that I actually look at this I might need to re-access my tipping policies.
Thank you for the heads up, cannot believe Ive overlooked this so long.

I do however hate being forced to tip for a service that should not require it. That pisses me off, especially when they expect it and your put on the spot.
My personal favorite is the tipping on the self check out in Newark Airport

Tipping is out of control. Prices are out of control. Restaurants want $35 for a meal that should be $20 and the server wants $10 on top of that 35 instead of $3.50 on top of that 20.
Well frick em. If the food is good and the service is bad I leave $20 on the table. If the both are good I leave $23.50 on the table and if the food is bad and the service is good I leave about $3.50 on the table.

Looks play just as big a piece as the actual service. Anyone that says they tip the ugly chick as much as the hot one is not being truthful.

I've seen my grandparents who are very well off, leave 10% tips when we'd go out to eat when I was growing up. Used to pain me for the servers

Especially when I travel, I always have cash.
Just a couple days ago at IAH we had to pull up the menu from an app, order through an app and then pay through the app and at that time I was asked to add a tip...how and why would I add a tip when no service had been performed? I wanted to see how long it took to get our food, did we get the right food, did we get our drinks, etc.
Everything was find so I tipped cash at the end...only 10% though since all she did was run our food and drinks. If it's not full service, I don't think it deserves full gratuity.
One cup of coffee, one OJ, one omelette and one egg sandwich which required three trips to our table (once to deliver drinks, once to deliver food and once to clean it at the end) earned $5, not $10+.

my rule for tipping: if i'm standing up, you're not getting a tip.
Posted on 6/3/24 at 12:16 pm to Murtown
I haven’t seen much reason to deviate from 15%-18% with 20% and above reserved for very good to exceptional service.
Sure inflation is a bear, but the quality of service has also dropped off.

Y’all better be tipping on pre tax prices not post.

You are never forced to tip. Some of those touch screens they spin around seem that way, but custom tip or no tip is usually at the bottom

The 15% rule is that you do not include tax or alcohol. That is the “rule.”
Anyone deviating from that is over tipping. I used to over tip, not anymore. Over tipping is fine as long as that is what you intend.

Why no alcohol? You don't tip a bartender?
I can understand possibly not tipping on the full amount of alcohol, but I don't know that I've heard about excluding it in its entirety.

I do 25% at my neighborhood restaurant but it’s BYOB so it’s kind of like a regular tip plus a corking fee that they don’t charge for. We’re always noticed when we walk in, get the seats we want and get generally great service. Elsewhere not so much. I got asked for a tip at the airport self checkin the other day.
Not sure where this crap started but pizza joints has done this for decades for carry-out. I used to leave them a dollar but now it’s zero. I think the Square checkout app was the first to add tips to literally everything.

No idea, but that is the rule.
Tip bartenders at the bar obviously.
