I teach at a rural Texas public school. Since the tragic shooting in Florida earlier this year, we have had several students jokingly and seriously threaten to up our school.

One of these kids is in one of my classes (he claims his statements about shooting the school was a joke). He has his house searched for guns, all guns found had the SN recored by police and were mandated to be put in a gun safe to which this student had no access to or knew the combination (this is done to every student who makes these kinds of threats). He was also sent to JDC for 3 days, then an alternative education facility for 15 days, and then returned back to our campus.

One of my co-workers has a student make the same threats (but these are considered to be real not a joke) and gets the same treatment as my student. However, upon his return to campus he makes another threat and leaves very troublesome comments on social media. Always referring to himself as a one of the infamous people as of late to do a big public shooting.

My thoughts on both of these instances, and this should be a federal law and not just state, these kids should automatically be kicked out of school and should receive court mandated GED at a secure location like JDC or something like that.

Thoughts?

If he is still making threats after being reprimanded, I dont think juvie is the place to send him.

Lock his arse up. Even if its a nut house.

Threats without proof of imminency should not result in any form of criminal prosecution.

Is he being bullied? Back in the day when bullying was legal these nerds were too sore from getting beat up to shoot a gun

Hard thing is that they're still kids and part of their upbringing is getting them through the angsty teenage bullshite they go through at this age. I don't know if it's right to send them to JDC or an alternative facility. I do think the search is warranted and long term counseling is needed.

As far one making a 2nd threat? Yeah, he's gone. Should be definitely be sent to JDC for a long time.

and what law required this?

because there is no law requiring a gun owner to have them locked up.

Exactly. Starting policing words and thoughts is an awfully slick slope there Mr. minority report.

With the internet being what it is, we really need to just get rid of every single school.

No reason kids can’t all be homeschooled.

It would cut down on teachers fricking every student they can get their hands on and literally eliminate school shootings.

I forgot to mention my student climbed up or band director tower near our football field and took pictures and claimed he was "Scooping out his snipping position".

I think they should be expelled for the entire year, perform community service, and forced to repeat said school year. I'm not entirely against your thought of kicking them out and getting their GED at a JDC, but at the same time these kids aren't acting maturely or rationally. They see these people becoming famous (infamous) and receiving alllllllll this attention so they want the same thing. That being said, I'd hate to deprive someone of a full socialized education because they said a poor joke.

It's a cloudy issue though. My sister was student teaching this year and a kid was doing some of the same stuff you ran into. He was threatening teachers and what not, but without true evidence and him showing a true threat the school's hands were tied. I was livid about it thinking about her safety! I was the first to say GET THAT MUH FUGGER OUT OF THERE IMMEDIATELY!

It's an unfortunate debate that we are in with no smooth solution on the horizon.

Should take them out back and beat the shite out of them. Kids laugh at the suspensions, bet they dont laugh at a broken nose.

With a thorough evaluation and investigation, you get a one time pass on "it was a joke". You do it again and you're losing a lot of freedoms. If you really meant it as a joke AGAIN, you're just dumb. You're gonna be in a special school and under tight surveillance. That's not a subject to take lightly AT ALL.

The real reason it won’t happen is only because one parent would have to stay home to assist in raising their kid.

Many people just aren’t going to be willing to do that.
