I lived in those times, too. Things are different now. To deny that is just short sighted rah rah shite. I don't know what reality you guys are in, but it's not today's.

Who's denying it?

Today's reality is being overly influenced by absentee parents and a self-indulgent, weak-kneed society that is imploding, and can't/won't instill discipline in children. They are not miniature adults. They're CHILDREN. But God forbid we hurt someone's little feelings by laying down hard rules for them to follow. They might get a frickin' complex or something.

I never said the student should be arrested, incarcerated, put in a cell, and serve a prison sentence.

The student, whose threat was deemed a serious one, should not be allowed in a public or private school ever again, if the student came within 500 yards of one they could be subject to immediate removal from the premises. This student is still in need of an education so my suggestion is to educate them in a secure location. JDC has an education system built into it, hard to get more secure than a prison. Student would not be a prisoner. He/she would be able to go home, have an normal life, they would be provided transportation to and from the secure school setting. Part of the GED mandate the student should be required to fulfill the minimum of the GED and receive some technical job training so they could seek a career afterwards.

Perhaps I was a bit over zealous on the punishment of the student who claims he was joking. But said student should be put on a watch list and could be subject to random searches for firearms by campus police.

Regardless, something should be done about students who say these things. I am not saying my suggestion should be the solution, but it could be a place to start. However, your interpretation of the Bill of Rights being: "I can say what I want because 'Merica" is an ignorant trailer park approach to freedom of speech. In certain forums there are things that one should not say. And this scenario is one of those situations.
