I was over at a game watching party last night. Everyone there except one is in finance and doing alright for themselves.
One guy, a VP, 28, has an MBA and doing very well for himself has started the process ofjoining the Chicago PD. He doesn't know if he will but I think he really wants to. There was very heated debate last night if this was acceptable or not, especially with the review that the justice department just put out.
I was on the side that he should join if that's what he wanted. Our general argrument was "he is an intelligent accomplished individual who is just the sort of person the force should be hiring. Athletic, even tempered, and quick on his feet, he'd do well and he hates watching his city destroy itself. Even if it isn't a career he wants to try. He realizes there might be some elements to the job that will be unpleasant.
Their argument: This city is shite and he will be miserable. Nothing will change and he will be depressed from the horrible shite you see every day. Let the people who grew up in those bad parts of town deal with all the bad shite because life's too short.

There shouldn't be a debate. As far as I'm concerned the guy can do whatever the hell he wants

Why would he give up his career to make 14 an hour getting shot at?

Be the change you want to see in the world. Good on him and best of luck.

They start at 45k and make 68 k after 18 months. That'd be a pay cut for him I'm sure but that ain't exactly poor.

I would think of he's that smart he should skip the pd and get into politics.
Change the city that way if that's what he wants to do.

He should be commended for doing it, but I doubt he lasts. There is a war of cops vs criminals in Chicago right now and, unfortunately, the criminals have the advantage...even a huge PR advantage.

Chicago has been that way since forever kinda like NOLA. It has to change from the top down.
Sounds like an uphill battle.

One man can't fix/overcome the extensive corruption of city government in Chicago. He should take his talents and apply to the IBI or FBI

Let him do what he wants, even though it's a bad decision unless that career actually makes him happy. Everything else is a downgrade. He'll take a pay cut, his future earnings will take a massive pay cut, he won't have as steady of an income, his work environment will be much more dangerous, his work will probably be more stressful, he'll have less control over his work (taking orders instead of making orders), he'll have to deal with scum on a daily basis, he'll probably have terrible working hours, he won't be able to make any significant change unless he becomes a ranking officer and ends up having another desk job, etc.
it's a terrible decision if it doesn't make him happy. But if it does, then it's the right move for him

I hope he doesn't base his decision on what other people think.
You would probably be surprised at the number of people, who have well paying jobs, but their job doesn't really have an impact on anything bigger than the company they work for, who has the feeling to want to do something that impacts others?
Money is important, but its not work living a miserable life. Again, I hope this dude follows what he really wants to do and not listen to some peckerwoods tell him how he should live.
