I could play you the exact same thing on different guitars and you could tell the difference. Same could be said for amps.
Now different strings, types of wood, pickups, cables, pedals, etc, maybe so or maybe not.
The same guitar can even sound different in different people’s hands. I great guitar player can make any guitar sound good because they get so much tone, or whatever you want to call it, from their finger tips and playing style.

Well, yeah, that's kind of my point. In the hands of a professional, I could see purchasing the top of the line. But is the sound going to be audibly improved with the playing of a layperson?

you can make a good guitar out of the MIM strats... But it takes some work!
Step 1 is removing the finish down to the wood and refinishing it (rattle can Nitro is good).
The MIM strats have a very thick poly finish that deadens the sound of the body (but keeps them from getting dinged up at the guitar store). The ones I have stripped also have a thin laminate on front and back which makes it look prettier, but also screws up the sound.
It takes some serious work to make the 6-screw trems stay in tune (locking tuners, tusq replacement nut or a very good lube, remove the 2 inner screws, dremel the saddles so the strings don't rub, chapstick under the bridge). But once you've don't all that, I love the feel of a traditional 6-screw.
Most important part is adding a treble bleed to the volume pot, and wiring so the tone knob works on the bridge pickup. I have a tonestyler on my MIM strat (switch in different capacitors to adjust the tone) which I love.

There is a video of John Mayer on YouTube, a kid in the audience hands him some type of cheap electric to autograph, he unplugs his strat or what ever he was playing, plugs in the kids guitar, tunes it up and finishes the song with it, it sounded the same as his high dollar guitar.

I saw Willie Nelson take a Telecaster from Roger Miller and it sounded just like his old, beat-up acoustic.

If it feels good when you play it, but it. Snooks Elgin could make a squire sound better than anyone with a MIA strat.
I’ve got an ‘89 jap strat that I’ve had since I was 12 that I love and I’ve got a Eric Johnson Strat that I love too. But I play the jap strat way more that the EJ. It sounds and plays better to me.

If you like the way a guitar feels just buy it.
I’ve got dozens upon dozens and they are all great to me. They range from cheap arse Mexican strats with a great neck to high end stuff.
Don’t worry about what you play but how you play and if you enjoy it.

I doubt one could tell the difference between the mexi-tele and it's American counterpart unless they really knew what to look for. But you should be able to tell the difference in sound from say a telecaster to a stratocaster. You can get a little different sound out of the start due to pickup combinations. I have a mexi tele in the closet I really need to pull out and fiddle with again.

Just got this American Special used for $550. I don’t love the color but it was a good price. The Texas special pick ups are pretty hot for single coils. I don’t love the grease bucket tone circuit and/or the no tone control for the middle pick up. I may rewire to have tone control on the middle.

That's a damn good buy for that price. I have two Ibanez project guitars I've been working on. Gonna throw in Seth Lover and Pearly Gates humbucking pickups in each.
