I honestly think that the only crime that warrants the death penalty is Child Molestation/rape.

In respect to the corrections officers who are involved in the executions, a media circus would only make it worse for them.

So, my answer is no.

murder that might have been deterred by the death penalty?
But the acts that lead to the death penalty are so rare and exteme that go past the threshold of a number of deterrents (prison, morality, social pressures) that it's unlikely that the death penalty is a deterrent for a person who has reached that point.

The cost doesn't come from the execution itself, but the appeals.

I suspect you're in favor of doing away with those too. Why worry about killing the right person when it's easier just to kill them on the spot?

It's widely rumored that we're a civilized society, but unless executions are public AND at least to some degree barbaric/dramatic/shocking/visibly painful, they're ineffective. That's just human nature.

Apparently it's a continuation of the Mizzoukills thread.

I don't have enough faith in our justice system to get it right every time. Our system is not perfect. Anyone in favor of the death penalty either:

1)Is ok with killing the occasional innocent person.

Or

2)Believes the court system is never wrong.

If you could show me they got it correct every time i would agree with the practice.

Exactly this.

I love how much the average OTer here is in favor of something resembling Sharia law.

Eye for an eye dates back well before sharia law.

And I love how people on the OT say "Sharia law" without having the slightest idea of how Sharia law works.

For those that say the death penalty doesn't prevent murders in the slightest, what punishment does?

It can be argued that the punishment for murder under sharia law is more advanced than the US.

From what I understand, sharia law leaves it up to the family. They can either kill him, demand money or forgive him.

The same constitution Obama wipes his arse with daily?

If liberals want it they will eventually get it. Leftists kill people.

How would you feel if A person in your family is gunned down in cold blood by somebody who just doesn't care???? Would it be OK for that person to have the right to have a last meal and say goodbye to their family when the person in your family did NOT have that choice????

I am guessing you fall in the 1st category of being ok with killing the occasional innocent person. Call me naïve but there's no way you convince me that killing innocent people serves a greater good. It's literally that exact mentality that lead people to believe in the final solution.

As long as it results in a net positive, sure.

There's an incredibly easy way to avoid the death penalty... don't murder someone. Don't murder someone in cold blood and the state won't kill you. Simple as homemade American pie.

ETA: And since we've reached the conclusion that the death penalty doesn't deter crime, I'm fine with it being considered strictly punishment and not a deterrent.

Because it's not used correctly.

If the penalties are harsh, swift and sure, you'll at least save money from housing criminals.
