So true.

I have said previously...embrace the tourist trap shite and get over yourself and it's a great time.

Define your family and I can give you specific guidelines

We have been going for decades since kids were small.

Lots of nice cabins but unless you have a large family hotels are an option

if you want to be in the middle of everything always stay in gatlinburg, and drive to pigeon forge. So much easier to park in pigeon daily (and for free) than it is g-burg. But staying in the burg you always can walk anywhere if you get bored day or night.

If you dont want all of that, grab a cabbin in wears valley or townsend and hike trails in the park, tube, raft, fish, cades cove

I left jizz all over a cabin called "A time for two". So you might avoid that cabin.

Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg are tourist traps. Drive an hour east to NC. The Blue Ridge Parkway, Boone, and Asheville are all better options.

Get a cabin ooutside Gatilinburg and spend a few days in the SMNP chasing waterfalls and other points of interest in the park and a day or two in Gatliburg or P Forge with the tourist. At the end of the day...it's all about the Smokies for me.

It is great. Where else can you get moonshine, taffy, moccasins, pocket knives, and throwing stairs in one place? Throw in pancakes and you know what Heavan is like.

If your going you must be trashy. Don't forget your cargo shorts.

I'm from Knoxville and have been going to the mountains all my life. It certainly has changed a lot. Agree with others' suggestions of staying in Wears Valley or Townsend and driving in, probably just a day Gatlinburg and a day in Pigeon Forge. Start days as early as you can beat the crowds. So many housing choices.

Gburg and PF are good for some cheesy fun. In PF, go kart, maybe outlet stores, eat lunch at The Old Mill. There are usually waits, but they'll text you when your table is ready, so you can explore the shops, look at the river, etc. wait isn't long inside. Also, I would highly recommend the Titanic museum. Although they went over the top on presentation, the artifacts and displays inside are very well done and even rival those of an official Titanic exhibit I saw many years ago in Seattle.

In Gburg, you've got, yes, the Pancake Pantry, which closes at 3:00 p.m. and is so worth getting up early. You can walk more easily here, and there are arcade games under the space needle. You can take the chair lift up (that thing is old), and there's a cool mini golf indoors that's fluorescent paint and lighting. And there's the free moonshine tastings if you can push your way through the crowds. And Carver's Orchard and Apple House Restaurant are highly recommended outside of Gburg toward Cosby.

Spend several days exploring the mountains. And I would also suggest an overnight to Asheville and a visit to Biltmore House - nothing else like it in this country. The Apple House Restaurant is conveniently on the way to a back exit toward Asheville with not having to deal with PF again on 321 through Pittman Center, Cosby, then hit I-40E at Newport.

My 2 cents. I miss home and will talk my head off about it. Y'all have a safe and fun trip.

Went with the inlaws a year ago New Years.... it was better than I expected. Food was good (hope you like corn chowder) but not great..... the mountain coasters were pretty fun. Dollywood far exceeded my expectations. We stayed in a cabin south of Pigeon Forge and I REALLY enjoyed the evenings chilling and grilling and Hot Tubbing it. Would like to go back in Summer and do the fishing and float trip stuff.

Traffic SUCKED!
To me it was a lot like Destin, FL set in the mountains with food choices that were not nearly as good.
Traffic was the same, sight seeing was really good, but Destin smashes from a food standpoint.
do the moonshine and wine tastings for sure....

I would go back.... just not soon.
