Good for you for signing up for training. Hopefully you have a good intructor. They will train you more than they train the dog. Dog training can be rewarding and does not take a lot of effort. Most dogs are excited to engage.

You might find this link interesting that will get your dog engaged and learn impulse control.

Shelter dogs are the best. So appreciative and loyal.

It's the way to go. Purebred dogs are getting insane in price and are commonly inbred. Some rescues are out of their minds and trying to charge breeder prices and show up at your house. Go to the local animal shelter, drop $35, and pick one that doesn't look like a pit. You'll immediately have a new best friend.

We adopted a Lab/German Shepherd mix almost 11 years ago and he's been nothing short of a stellar dog. Amazingly smart animal.

Yes. The rescue I’m a member of and the ones I help all offer a trial period. And vet the dogs and cover hw treatment. Our shelter also covers hw treatment, vaccines, and spay/neuter for an adopted dog for an adoption fee of $69 here in Jefferson Parish at the shelter. They also allow fostering. Can’t beat that.

Rescues are the best. Give a creature that has been abused or neglected a chance to show their love.

We have had seven rescues over the years. Some were neglected and abused labs. Others were just mutts. All were loyal, faithful, and totally loving.

Be advised. There will be hiccups. As with all dogs, some require more work and understanding than others.

Also, just my two cents, get two. Dogs are pack animals. Besides a companion will give your rescue a compadre.

We have never regretted it. Again, rescues are the best breed.

Take care! Good luck! Enjoy them. God bless!

Had a German Shepard mix that’s now 9 yrs old. Best damn dog I’ve ever had. She still has a lot of pep in her for a big old gal.

Thank you for fostering! I have too and go with the Pyrenees mixes, black dogs, brindles, and plain brown dogs. Bc the latter 3 die the most so I focus on them. Those plain brown (likely cur mixes) have been amazing and all have found wonderful homes. I even fostered a “Clifford” once, a huge red lab looking dog. Some Rhodesian in him, maybe, if not pure. Or perhaps was a rarer red lab.

I have pits and pit mixes for pets who are my dog testers bc they are dog friendly. My Pyrenees shepherd mix, not so much, lol. He doesn’t do strange animals or people.

Great for you and your pup that you have started classes. Don't give up and don't look back. Please remember it takes time to change old bad habits and neglect that most rescues have endured.

The day will come that you will realize it was well worth the commitment. It takes time (and sometimes alot of it). Your rescue will make mistakes and many of them. The biggest thing your rescue needs is patience and understanding. Give them love and more love.

Kudos to you for making room in your life for a dog in need.

I’ve only had rescue dogs so far (as an adult) and they will love you unconditionally.

I cried like a baby for a week when my first one (pit/lab mix) crossed the rainbow bridge.

The 2nd one is a little brown terrier mix/squirrel dog. He’s a little shite but I love him even though I hate him.

I tell myself I’d love a golden retriever for my next dog but I’ll probably end up rescuing again.

ETA both of my dogs were rescued off the side of the street, not a shelter, but still.

Yes but only if it's a pit.

They are the best, because they know you rescued them!

Got my first dog from the shelter in Starkville while I was in college(a little over 14 years ago). From my research, he appeared to be mostly mountain cur. Brindle coat, loyal as hell, and a squirrel killing machine. I put him down about a month ago. He was a fine dog.

I have a purebred basset that I bought from a breeder. I got a border collie mix from a shelter to specifically help socialize him. Having bassets for so long, I forget was highly intelligent dogs can be like. My shelter collie is super smart and sweet. I consider myself lucky to have gotten her.

Irresponsible to adopt shelter dogs if you have small children. If you don’t then have at it

There’s a reason they are in a shelter. Hard pass. Need to find a breeder doing high volumes to ensure quality.
