Absolutely demolished the Constitution, but saved the Union.

The Union was a voluntary arrangement. Member states were free to leave.

But when they did, he chose to centralize power instead of letting them exercise their freedom to do so.

The only reason there was a Civil War was because the northern states couldn't make money off slaves.

Is that why Great Britain used their navy, at great expense, to disrupt the slave trade? The truth is that conscientious men and women had long since concluded that Africans were humans and that enslaving humans was a great moral wrong…and they were right.

The Civil War was a moral war, just as it was framed by the nonpareil Abraham LIncoln.

Lincoln had a drawer on his desk labeled, "If nowhere else, look here." I borrowed that and always had that label on my miscellaneous folder that I kept on my desk.

Nothing I posted is contrary to this statement.

Lot's of people end up giving the credit to Lincoln for freeing the slaves. Truth of the matter is, he didn't free a single one. His "Emancipation Proclamation" kept slavery in place on the border states, but "Freed" slaves in the South. Problem is, Lincoln had no control over the Southern States at the time. The whole "Emancipation Proclamation" was a farce. Even the 13th Amendment was ratified by the states. You can argue that Lincoln helped craft it, but it wasn't even legislation he signed into law. Lincoln ran roughshod over the Constitution. He imprisoned his political opponents, journalists, and dissenters. Slavery was dying it's natural death in the Western World. Given another decade or so, it would have died it's natural death in the US as well. Instead we got a civil war. These United States of America turned into The United States of America and into the giant federal monstrosity it is today. Lincoln should shoulder some of the blame for the problems our country faces today, not all, but some.
.

Agree with all this. Especially about slavery. Lincoln was basically a failed businessman and failed politician before becoming President. A civil war with 600,000 deaths could’ve been avoided

More importantly, he was a corporate lawyer before becoming President with 39% of the popular vote.

Yet it was never brought to a vote as an amendment before the war by these so called conscientious people, now was it?

And when was this statement made in 1861 before the war began?

Back during the “let’s tear down the statues” craze, there were mindless college kids that wanted his statues gone.

How much of that energy was spent on trying to head off the actions of the African warlords that sold those same humans to other countries?

Think of the things we have not brought to vote as amendments: Voter ID, Birthright citizenship; and the limiting of the Commerce Clause to bolster States’ Rights. Why? Because these would have 0% chance of passing.

A Constitutional Amendment to ban slavery, when half the states were slavers, would have had no chance to garner the 3/4s of the states necessary.

I can’t believe you seriously asked that question, because the answer is, “All over Christiandom.” Most notably in Uncle Tom’s Cabin.

Sounds like most in this thread would have helped them.
