This Week in WWII History - Molotov's Heel on Finland and Nobody to Fight in the West

A little late on this one. Should have posted it on Saturday or Sunday. Anyways....
Ten weeks into World War Two, and the Allied ground forces are bored in France. In North-Eastern Europe, Poland's suffering has no end and Finland is in the crosshairs of the USSR.

How about the Russians and Germans.?

For sure. I was more describing how the “allies” allowed the Soviets to invade two countries with no repercussions. I always wondered why the allies didn’t declare war on the soviets when they invaded . Did some research and the treaty basically said anyone can invade Poland except Germany . I was surprised

I read somewhere that during the Winter War, the Finns had a sniper who had over 500 Soviet kills in 100 days.
shite. Do you realize how difficult it is to rack up numbers like that?

Because they both could have intervened effectively in 1939? They declared war and got their clocks cleaned in Western Europe.
Or because they could have rolled back the USSR after WWII? Both were prostrate and bankrupt.
The only country that had the ability to stop the USSR was the US, and FDR's policy was to let Stalin do what he desired.

In Poland’s case, the Allies pledged to them that they would attack Germany if they violated Polish sovereignty via invasion. While they did declare war, the British and French barely lifted a finger against Germany even though the Franco-German border was virtually undefended for the entirety of September 1939.

It became a blitzkrieg soon enough.

And the British would have managed to lose their entire expeditionary force in 1939.
The pledge may have been made as a political gesture to try to prevent war, but Britain and France weren't going to save Poland no matter what they did, neither were prepared for war, militarily or emotionally. Particularly with the USSR gobbling up their share the lack of an attack in the West was inconsequential and probably beneficial.
And don't forget the gallant Poles took a slice of Czechoslovakia in 1938 when they had the chance.

Currently reading The Winter Fortress after the thread about Norsk Hydro and Ronneberg the other week. Not sure if you started that one as well, but thank you.
Highly recommend.

I'm not saying the French and British should have done something, I'm merely saying that they lied to Poland. Though I'm pretty sure everyone was stunned at how quickly the Germans overwhelmed the Poles.
