A sailor from the cruiser Shiloh whom Navy officials said fell overboard last week, triggering a massive search-and-rescue effort, has been discovered on board.
Presumed dead after going missing June 8, Gas Turbine Systems Technician (Mechanical) 3rd Class Peter Mims reportedly hid himself in one of the engine rooms, according to two sources familiar with the situation.
It is unclear how Mims survived a week in the engineering space or where he was hiding. He will be flown off Shiloh for evaluation soon.
Mims' disappearance prompted a massive, 50-hour search-and-rescue effort off the coast of Japan that included Japanese Coast Guard and naval forces.
Helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft from the carrier Ronald Reagan along with a Navy P-8 maritime patrol aircraft, the destroyers John S. McCain and McCampbell, and the Reagan itself all assisted Shiloh in the search for the missing sailor, according to releasse from U.S. 7th Fleet during the search.

possible but unlikely. He will probably go to the restricted barracks and then be processed out of the USN

Is this the guy there was a thread about that someone knew?

I used to log several hours of naps outboard of the starboard R114s and MSW pumps. Underneath the turbine generators was always full of people sleeping during field day as well if the engine room was shut down.
Batterywell sleep was a thing of beauty if you were senior enough to be sent down there for field day.
Had an officer that would open his rack curtain about 1/3 of the way, then ball up and sleep in the other 2/3 so it looked like he was awake.
But then again that was a submarine and not a week long. This guy is fricked.

If i were on the jury a simple "I'm from Putnam county" would suffice.

I'm sure that only cost tax payers about 5 million or so.

Some other favorite spots - 688 class engine room.
Main engine bed plates - as accessed from behind the MSW pumps.
(In port - in the shipyard) Was once "cleaning" on top of MS3 with khaki's all hanging out by the RC Div workbench. I let out a massive burrito laden fart that was about the smelliest I've ever unleashed - the khaki's all looked around and blamed each other, I almost gave up my position trying not to laugh.
Above the lube oil pumps there was a lot of space - that was my go to for a while.
It was funny how many people you can hide in a tightly cramped engine room.

I used to spend 2 hours in the Aux tank looking for a can of green beans

See, I definitely thought it would be longer than that and you'd serve out your time in Kansas then they'd give you the discharge. I can understand that those short sentences and timeframes wouldn't get you sent to Kansas.
Kansas.

We'd be on shift work for weeks and half of the damn shift crew would be passed out somewhere in the engine room. It was a ghost town except for the guys in maneuvering
What 688 were you on? 766 here.
ETA: our engine room layout was a bit different than yours as we were the first test boat for SSN-21's engine room. I'd talk to other friends on different boats about where things were on the Charlotte and they were always so confused.

SSN-701, soon to be MTS-701. Was there through the refueling overhaul in the 90's and then stayed on through the next Westpac.

at least no one died while looking for him after he turned himself over to the Taliban

Either he had friends, or he spent weeks stashing food in the engine room.
I wonder if his plan was to sneak off the ship the next time she tied to the pier and start a new life? I also wonder if they were supposed to pull in the day after he "fell overboard" and the search-and-rescue mission really threw off the plan.
