I saw someone once say that Post Malone looks like a pile of dirty laundry. And that was pretty spot on.

He’s successful as frick though I believe. His music isn’t really for me though.

All you have to be is lucky and know people to make it in music these days. Talent not really needed. Any dumbfrick with luck and connections can make it big.

This couldn’t be further from the truth. All you need to make it now is a laptop, ProTunes, and a Spotify/TikTok/Instagram account. Obviously big money labels still matter, but the barrier to entry is entirely removed.

i know a guy that looks like a fatter (non-tattooed) version of Post Malone.

that’s the only reason i knew what this dude looked like.
I had to google him a couple years ago to see who the hell all the whippersnappers at work were talking about.

it was never as easy as it is now to make it in music with absolutely no talent

Blame the listeners, not the people profiting from it.

For example, it's not Lizzo's fault that people willingly pay money to listen to a lard arse with no vocal or lyrical talent.

She's just providing a service.

That guy is one of the most successful musicians of all time. I don't know his songs though. I read a while back that he had more weeks on the top 10 than Michael Jackson's thriller and more songs in the top 10 or something at one time then the Beatles.

Music today is mass marketed and produced like never before. Albums are released ACROSS THE WORLD at the same time on YouTube, Spotify, etc. So at any one time the entire globe is basically listening to the same shite. The #1 song on the Top 40 is the same in Bucharest and Baghdad as it is in Dallas.

Producers and corporations do indeed make artists rather than vice versa more than ever before, in the same way that Hollywood makes people famous. They get chosen and molded.

Now, that doesn’t mean there isn’t some damn good, even historically good music out there that is being mass produced, but it’s a helluva lot different these days. Record companies used to be like college recruiters, combing the countryside looking for talent and writers used to risk it all to head to Nashville or LA.

Everybody’s got a buddy that can belt it out doing Sublime on Karyoke. Put them with a world renowned producer and marketing team and you’ve got your next star.

I honestly have no problem with the dude, I don’t know anything about him. I heard of him but until last night had no idea he sang some of the songs that I recognized. On the other hand I had no idea he looked like a god damn clown with all the face, arm and finger tats. Of course my teenage kids knew who he was but I’ve just never really been that plugged into these new age pop culture artist.

I grew up in the 80’s and 90’s. Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Metallica, Smashing Pumpkins, Bush, Soundgarden, TuPac, Snoop, Dre, Too Short, Ice Cube, Eazy E, Herbie Hancock, MC Hammer, you get the jist

Music is pretty good, it’s not really rap. It’s unique and very likable.

Malone is considered a great guy and is involved with numerous charities and gives a lot of time to a lot of causes. I’d hang out with him.

I’m 35 years old for reference point

I’m 26 years old and he’s absolute trash.

Best description I heard was Post Malone looks like the .1% of germs that lysol can't kill.

He does seem to have a way with producing hit music. Crossing a few genres from hip hop to edm and rockish.

His response to being on a jet that almost crashed or something and people wishing death on him made me actually give him a break.

What is the difference between a juke box play in 1957 and a stream in 2020?

Either count them both or dont but using apples to camels comparisons to prop up newer artist and make them look better in comparison is nonsense.

I don't really get what you're getting at.

The old metrics don't work anymore because the old ways are gone. You HAVE to count streaming these days because that's how the majority of people consume the music. By the old metrics music would be LESS popular than ever, and that's just not the case.

I don't know exactly how they measure the streams. Is it unique individual streams or is it total # of streams, meaning someone listens to it 100 times and they get credit for all 100 listens?
