De-institutionalization has absolutely contributed to a host of current social ills.

Psych wards are still very much used. You are thinking about insane asylums.

It wasn't a gross over reaction, asylums were wild and it's not just from a movie.

Make Asylums Great Again. Better than turning our classrooms into the playgrounds for the mentally disturbed.

absolutely. From jails/prisons to insane asylums. Too many bad people walk free these days.

Yeah my brother in law had psychiatric problems. Kept doing erratic shite which got progressively worse. Got to where he'd have pretty unbalanced and threatening episodes, but nothing physical. Cops were called a few times, and a couple times they even took him to jail to cool off, but they said they couldn't do anything serious unless he harmed himself or others. One night he finally slugged my mother in law and that was when the law was finally able to take him to jail for a few days, and in that time my sister in law had to fight like hell with the state to get him admitted to a psych center. Finally they got him put on meds and he has settled down for a couple years now. During the whole time he was having the episodes, my family tried and tried to convince him to get help, but he refused saying there was nothing wrong with him. Hence, the authorities could do nothing. It was only by the grace of God that the thing that finally triggered the solution was punching my mother in law, and not something much more sinister.
