this is all the result of “One flew over the Cuckoos nest” Phenomena

Most on here are not old enough to remember this movie etc from the 70s. (Yes I know it was a damn book, I was reading comic books back then. The American mental health system really was in some areas just as bad as it was shown in that Brilliant movie. Hell, it was based upon sone of them. There were definitely nurse Cratchets (sp) out there and a lot of them.

However, after that movie and numerous investigative reports etc. we really made it extremely difficult or impossible to commit someone to a psych ward, and essentially began shutting asylums down all over the country. As a result most of the people that are clinically insane a wandering around our streets, and constant problems for law-enforcement. (which they are not trained to deal with nor are they supplied with adequate funding to be able to deal with this issue) We just traded hospital wards for prison cells.

Austin, Texas is a perfect example of where good intentions lead to bad results. The crazy homeless wandering around the streets and every corner are all harmless until one end ups raping, or murdering a Coed every 3 years or so, while all the general local population tries to tell you that they are all harmless. Simply a lie we tell each other to get through the day.

We as a society grossly overreacted to that movie and the corresponding issues that were present in our psychiatric hospitals and facilities, and he has a result they are “crazy people” running all over the place in this country, without any help and yes they can get a AR-15 and kill people any time every day and twice on Sunday. I am not sure what the solution is but it’s a freakin mess. Prayers to the families of todays victims, and those that will be from next shooting by a crazy person and the next.

Kennedy was instrumental in closing down mental hospitals. Some people are just not equipped to deal with society in general.

i had family members come to me when a baby lawyer in the 90s, worried about a older child or relative that had obvious mental issues, and try to get them help, to discover how hard it had become unless they commit a crime. You can get help after you commit a crime and state determines your clinically insane but not before

I remember One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. I’m not so sure I’ve seen What Flew Over.

I love the movie too, but there’s a lot of truth to the OP. There are few better examples of an author with a very clear agenda (and Kesey’s was abundantly and unabashedly so) succeeding as much as he did.

Psych wards are still very much used. You are thinking about insane asylums.

It wasn't a gross over reaction, asylums were wild and it's not just from a movie.

Just to play the antagonist role here. I've seen plenty of "mad" people wandering around places in Africa that receive no help. Never heard of one shooting up anything.

Not sure what point you’re trying to make.

Just had my Mother in law in Ochner on a 72-hour hold under orders from the choroner.

She's crazy as shit, but that is just the way that dingbat always has been.
